Ryanair excess baggage charge?

Hi all,

Came back from Spain yesterday and when checking in we got a nasty surprise from Ryanair......... excess baggage

When we left the UK last week, both our cases were 20Kg..... and no problem (I thought this was the limit)

But on the way back our cases were 20.2kg & 22kg and guess what, they now say the limit is only 15kg but hold on, no one said anything when we flew out!!!!!!

Anyway I had to pay 100 euros (thanks ryanair) but the strange this is when I handed over my credit card, they didn't ask for me to type in a pin or even a signiture?????

Now can I dispute this charge with my credit card, i.e. it was unauthorised or it should have only been 10 euros?

Maybe worth a try?

Was it Girona by any chance ? There was an article in The Times about their faulty scales. I saw it myself in March, half the plane got charged excess baggage, the air was blue

Surely Ryanair is 15kg per person, has been for ages.

The fact that you got away with excess in the UK was pure good luck.

    Clear enough on their website;

Passenger may purchase up to 5 items of baggage per person. Please Note: That the total Checked Baggage Allowance per person is 15kg irrespective of the number of items of baggage purchased per person. There is no baggage allowance for infants, although a pram/buggy will be carried free of charge.

They actually allow 15.9 KG as the excess charge is per KG over.
Recent flight I had 16.2 and took out a Jumper to get me down to 15.8.
Good move to weigh yourself and then with your case b4 you leave !
I had forgotten I was taking a bottle of whisky with me !

Like others have said it has been 15kg for quite a while, and that can be difficult when a fairly average case can weigh 4-5kgs empty! However,we agree to thos elimits when we sign up for tickets so I don't think you can dispute the charge.

If you think it is unfair then maybe you should offer to pay the excess on the way out instead, as it seems unfair they let you off on that ocassion. I also don't think it unreasonable at all for the case to weight differently in two directions..even a towel or something carried slightly damp can make a difference on such small weight limits.

I use RyanAir when I can and have noticed a general trnd not to charge for excess going out from the UK, but to always be charged by overseas check ins on the return journey.

Yep, its 15kg's and has been for a while, check their website and you will see this is your allowance. I flew in April to Girona...had no probs, 14kg going and coming back.

It's hardly Ryanairs fault if you can't be bothered to read the T&C's
What do you expect them to do,come round to your house and slap you round the face with a wet fish whilst chanting 15kg 15kg 15kg 15 kg

    Thanks for the replies!

I know I should of checked the weight limits, but what I'm asking is when they took my credit card details they never asked for my sig or pin - so does that mean I could dispute the charge with my CC?

    What do you think?

You were asked to pay €100. You chose to pay by credit card. You willingly handed it over, fully expecting the money to be charged to your card. It was.

Which bit of the transaction do you want to dispute?

There are plenty of CC transactions that go ahead without a PIN or signature - think of car-park machines for example.

CC transactions when the card owner is not present.

If I go into a shop buy something I need to use my pin or signature.

    It just an idea?!
