can't get internet connection

I changed my mobile recently and am very rarely able to connect to the internet, apart from when I am at home. I think it was better when I first got the phone so can't understand why I'm having this problem now. I'm with the same network as previously (Virgin) and I've been out and about with people on the same network who've been able to connect to the internet when I can't.

Any ideas please? :(

Are you able to connect at all?

What phone did you have before and what phone do you have now?

    Are your settings right?

If your new phone was sim free or unlocked from another network - it could be that your APN settings aren't correct for Virgin.
When you're at home, are you actually connecting to the internet via your mobile signal - or via wifi?

I can connect at home but very rarely when I'm out and about and it seems to be getting more and more rare!

I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace (gave it away because the phone memory was tiny and it doesn't allow you to save many apps to the SD card). I now have a ZTE Blade 3 - cheap and not so cheerful!

I think my settings are correct. Going through the online manual at the moment to try to check and they look correct. I did think I could have accidentally turned something on or off but it looks OK so far.

Just go through this guide and tell us if the settings match

Go to Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & networks-> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> New APN and enter the following details. Add tow APN's

    Virgin Mobile UK Internet/GPRS Settings:
    Name : Virgin UK
    APN : goto.virginmobile.uk
    Proxy : <Not Set>
    Port : <Not Set>
    Username : user
    Password : blank
    Server : <Not Set>
    MMSC : http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
    MMS Proxy : 193.030.166.002
    MMS Port : 8080
    MMC : 234
    MNC : 30
    Authentication Type : <Not Set>
    APN Type : default.

'Port' doesn't say 'not set', there is a number there (8080). MMSC shows as 'not set' as do MMS Proxy and MMS Port. MCC and MMC match, but Authentication type says 'PAP'.

try adding a new APN with those settings and using that.

    Does it make a difference?

I've tried setting up a new APN using those details but it's not making a difference. Couple of silly questions in case I'm doing something wrong though. When you say password: blank, does that mean I should actually type the word 'blank' in for the password or do I leave it as 'not set'? Also where you say APN type: default, does that mean to leave is as 'not set'?

From what I can tell it is working Okish when I can connect to wifi (like when I'm in the house) but not otherwise. I've tried turning wifi off in the house and I can't get an internet connection until I turn it back on. Having said that, it must be working some of the time because I did use part of my data allowance this month. This makes me think that something changed at some point but I don't know what that could be!

Thank you so much for your help so far. Any other suggestions gratefully received!

    very weird.

And others on virgin are able to get a data connection?
Have you tried your sim in another phone?

And i assume you just leave the password as not set and the APN type as it is.

You've probably already tried this but under mobile networks there should be an option that says "Packet data" or "mobile data" with a tick box next to it. Is that ticked?
