What food/groceries are cheaper at Iceland?

  • When all is said and done, we all have our different opinions on current issues etc including where to shop otherwise wouldn't the world be a dull place. The only item I don't like to buy from Iceland is their mince as I find it greasy, I do however find Lidl's mince superb but each to their own :p

I go there for eggs, packs of sliced sandwich meat, pitta bread if I forgot to get any from Asda, frozen peppers, pizzas and frozen prawns and fish (they do good value plain fillets of various fish). And occasional junk, "kids food" and party foods, just because I like it once in a while :p.
  • Thanks for all the replies! I ventured back to Iceland today and picked up 4 litres of milk and a 2 pack of baby gem lettuce (which only cost 50p). It formed the main part of our salad for dinner this evening and was really nice and fresh so can't complain! I took a good look at the frozen veg section and discovered the frozen peppers CupofChai mentioned, never seen them frozen on their own before and they are getting so expensive to buy fresh. Tesco have stopped selling Everyday Value bags of peppers in my local store, as well as Everyday Value tomatoes too. Not impressed. So I will try these out when I return on Monday. And steer well clear of the frozen mince!!!

Might also try their "premium" cooked meats - they looked nice and cost £1.50/£1.75. Will bear the chips in mind too, although I think the same pack of chips have been sitting in our freezer for over six months now! We go through phases!

Just wondering about their party food - I've always been put off by Kerry Katona advertising their party food from years ago - got the impression it was cheap (which it is) and probably of poor quality (which it may not be), which isn't ideal when you want to feed your friends and family and make it look like you went to some effort! Any feedback?

For the party food: they often have big packs of things like samosas, spring rolls, pakoras, bhajis, satays etc which are ideal for party nibbles. I have also bought them to jazz up HM curries and stir fries. Their prawn rings make a good party centre piece.

I'm not a fan of ready meals either but if you don't have a Farmfoods near you then it's worth looking at frozen veg. I used to buy smoked salmon fillets there too but they discontinued them but still worth looking at plain frozen fish.

Iceland big bonus is that they can very often deliver on the day if you go early, I can spend £25 no trouble and then it's delivered at 2pm same day. Now the other huge bonus with Iceland is they don't have a huge selection of junk -this stops me buying it! I'm really good at budget shopping, but I often come home with really good value reduced stuff - that we didn't actually need :(

They have a decent vegetarian selection, and the birds eye vegetable fingers are £1 a box, £2 in asda (or 2 for £3).I do bread and milk, all sorts of frozen vegetables, love the frozen sliced peppers which we use instead of meat in everything (curry, sweet & sour, fajitas) and the cauliflower and broccoli isn't cooked so much that it goes squishy when you cook it, so it makes good cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Their crisps are often the best deal in town, and the bread things, like 2 for £1 rolls and crumpets are good quality. And the £1 pizzas are really nice.

I try to get the other stuff from asda, cook in sauces, cans etc, but I give myself a £10 budget so I can't get crazy.

I suppose it depends what you mean by junk but I would put lots of their ready meals in that category.

Thanks for the tip about the cauli and broccoli. That usually goes off the menu here when cauli gets to silly prices.

Junk - cakes. We don't buy ready meals except pizza every two weeks. But cakes. .. everyone's a sucker for a good cake, if I buy them, the boys hoover them down in record time. No such thing as buying them to last in this house.

Last Christmas I bought a Prawn Ring and a box of the Chicken bites
5.00 each for a family evening of present wrapping. They were really good, particularly the chicken, everyone commented on this and wanted to know where they could buy some.
