:rotfl:A week ago I bought a a y reg ford galaxy from a private trader, he trades from his home. He stated that he took car as part x didn't know much about it but had looked it over and all seemed fine.
In the week since the turbo went and now cam belt.
I paid £1600. Do I have any rights?

If he took the car in as a p/x, it sounds like he is a trader so NOT a private seller. To make sure, check to see if his name is on the V5c... if not then SOGA applies.
Contact him to ask him to either rectify at no expense to you or give you your money back. If he stalls, send a formal letter asking the same thing and giving him 7 days to respond.
If it is a genuine private sale then your statutory rights are very limited. SOGA would only apply if you could show the car was deliberately falsely advertised/described. Outside of that, you would be stuck as there is no other comeback against a bona-fide private seller.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
Firstly he's a trader and not a private trader.
Yes you do have rights, have you contacted him yet?0 -
No we haven't contacted him yet.0

What's the mileage?
Has the cambelt destroyed your engine?0 -
What should I say when I call? Cam belt went whilst it was in garage for the turbo to be confirmed as broken and has not damaged engine as far as I. Aware0

Did you contact the seller after the turbo failed?0 -
Tell him what you've told us, no doubt he'll argue the belt is down to your garage.0

You have rights, these are not to be confused with the "chances of getting your money".
The two are a world apart.Be happy...;)0 -
Always, always, take it back to the dealer, do not use a lcoal garage.
The dealer can claim that the cam belt was damaged by the garage.0 -
Happy to just get the car fixed and in useable order0
