£1.50 text charge?????

You are very lucky, only T-Mobile will allow a bar on short codes, the means of sending PR texts, all the other networks give the excuse that cannot do it for either technical or contractual reasons. The truth being that that can earn up to 35% of the charge for the PR texts.
If I am not mistaken Tesco Mobile use o2 network, as an o2 customer I was told that the network set up would not allow a bar, see what I mean!!!!!
Tesco Mobile allow receiving premium rate texts to be barred by the user as well as the option of barring premium rate calls to be made and also a bar on accessing adult content via WAP.
As you said Tesco use O2 network and all O2 advise is to reply with the word STOP as if that is going to stop it or get your money back.0 -

Hi Summer,
Glad to hear that you are going to chase it up to get your hard earned cash back. These cowboys prey on folks that download ringtones, music or anything that you have to either give your mobile details or download. You can't let it stop your fun but as long as you are aware you can't go wrong. Like me you learned the hard, expensive way.

I know I haven't signed up for anything too, but I had a message saying a service I had ordered from 80160 could not be supplied because I had insufficent credit (thank goodness). I text STOP straight back, but then got the same message from 80006. I can picture me topping up my credit just to send STOP to one message after another from different 8.... numbers. Any advice will be welcome please.0

You are correct in thinking that as soon as you put credit on your phone there's a good chance that these cowboys will 'steal' it and will continue as they have manged to obtain your details.
You have two ways of dealing with this problem. First: Contact the companies , details below, but be warned the 0871 number will cost up to 35p per min from a mobile and 12p+ per min from a landline. Inform them that you have not subscribe to any service, which they will deny but stand your ground, and demand a refund. Then make a complaint to PhonePayPlus, see their web site or contact the CEO direct on gkidd@phonepayplus.org.uk.
The safest option, depending how you value your present number, destroy you payg sim and start afresh. I know this will cause inconvenience but in the end it is the best option.

Hi Gremlin
I take it the message from 80006 actually charged you, how much did they charge you. I received a message the other day from the 80006 number which says Error. Message cancelled.
I am not best pleased :mad:as this would have been my second scam text this month.

Thank your for all the contact details Intasun32, I'll contact them. Funny how it's 2 different totally companies! I've had my number for about 6 years now, all my family know it off by heart, so I don't want to lose it (but if I must, so be it). AJB135, luckily because I had just run out of credit they didn't manage to take any money, it's just meant that I'm not able to top-up for fear of them taking it.0

Hi Bubblybabe,
Thank you for the compliment, but I gained my know how the hard way, I was also a victim of a scam sadly like too many mobile phone users.
To answer your question.... It like Russian Roulette, it's a gamble when you use any unknown web site or download items from a wap site that you give your mobile details. There are decent companies out there that sell music, ringtones and other services but you only hear about and remember the 'cowboys'. The problem is once the company has your mobile phone details, a majority will either delete it immediately or after a set amount of time. The cowboys either use it to scam, ie the sending of unsolicited reverse bill texts, or sell it on as part of mailing lists which go for quite a tidy sum.
Blackberry & Smartphone users can purchase anti virus progs, as you will know, that will protect you if you are downloading symbols or animation direct from a web site or from a pc. Like PC Internet Security they can also scan incoming e-mails. This is a different type of problem to the above.
Hope that helps. :xmassmile0
