Scottish Power No Standing Charge no longer exists?

Options
Hi, Scottish Power informed me that "No Standing Charge" tariffs no longer exist. Is this now the case? I am having trouble finding any info on this and would be grateful to know if anyone has a new tariff with any of the energy companies that is a no standard charge one.

Many thanks.

I think new Ofcom rules prevent two-tier pricing, so standing charges will be essentially compulsory. The only other way is to have single-tier pricing but this would make it way too easy for customers to compare so the "big 6" won't do this.

Anyway, standing charge and no standing charge tariffs used to cost the same unless you used a very low amount each year. If this is indeed the case, you'd be better off with someone like Ebico.

For new customers this is mostly true for most companies. Scottish Power were said to be holding out and offering it on request for some tariffs but I do not know whether or not they have abandoned this policy - perhaps the advisor was incorrect and did not have the details.

As to others Ebico and Utilities Warehouse are about all that is left who offer no standing charge tariffs. Unfortunately they are not two-tier tariffs so do not have the flexibility of being able to decide to use more energy on a quarter by quarter basis without the swingeing penalty.

npower are also a possibility - they do have standing charges but this may be sufficiently offset by the £105 annual discount.

Unfortunately Ofgem do not give a damn about scum like you who prefer two-tier tariffs and they have decided to deprecate them. Write a letter of complaint to Ofgem, not to the energy suppliers.

The trouble is is that this solution does not give you the flexibility that two-tier tariffs did. If it is particularly cold one winter you can not just whack on the heating without being gouged.

Scottish Power do still offer No Standing Charge tariffs.

I just sent to their website and checked. I get offered this tariff.

Online Energy - No Standing Charge
      • An online variable account with tiered unit rate and no standing charges
      • Full Online Account Management
      • No early cancellation charges

Maybe it depends on your area. It is not on the front of the website, it is only offered once you fill in the form. Might be worth a try?

Although we are on the Social Tariff, we have the choice of having it on with a Standing Charge or No Standing Charge, therefore they still exist.
