  • Don't forget to add local taxes onto that...better still, read the NYC thread.

they probably need to rethink budget (or spend the £400 for 2 nights instead of 3)
Expedia have 331 hotels available for those dates in Manhattan, of which 2 are within their budget!

Would they be happy renting privately, you can rent entire homes/flat here

I would not recommend this. Most short term rentals in Manhattan are illegal.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

    Two things.

Firstly as noted by someone else, airbnb listings for NYC as suggested by another forumite are illegal. It's illegal to rent an apartment for less than 30 days in New York City. It's a great way to book somewhere to stay in many cities around the world, but not NYC.

Their budget is just about managable, but I'd stay well away from staying near times square for two reasons. One it's not a great area to stay in. Sure every person visiting the city for the first time will visit Times Square, but it really is a tourist trap with over priced hotels, chain restaurants and stores. NYC is very easy to get around, don't be fooled into thinking you need to stay near Times Square. The attractions of the city are spread all over the city. Secondly it's a poor area choice as the hotels in that area will be expensive as they hike the prices for tourists that want to stay near Times Square! The cheaper hotels in that area tend to be very run down.

If I was them I'd look at hotels in Brooklyn or Long Island City with easy Subway links into Midtown Manhattan. That way they can travel within budget, stay somewhere decent and all for the sake of a 10/20 subway ride. Hotels aren't cheap in NYC, so with their budget to sleep three I'd be looking for a room outside Manhattan.

Remember if pricing things on booking.com the tax will be added to the price quoted, which is 14.75% tax and a $3.50 per night room tax.

I've stayed at the Pod hotel before a Trek America trip and loved it - some of the rooms are shared bathrooms, but the bathrooms are spotlessly clean and the hotel was really nice.
