Cancellation of original flight

Hi looking for advice here. My family and I in USA for the summer on a return ticket with airline. Flown from Birmingham to USA via Dublin.
Flying (me wife and 3 kids) late August 2013 back from USA to Birmingham UK with a connection in Dublin in the middle. Initially expecting a 5 hour wait in Dublin for the 2nd flight. OK.
I've been told (received an email and I then rang them) today that the original flight from Dublin to Birmingham has been cancelled and they want to put me on a flight 5 hours even later so I will have to wait 10 hours now!
I asked for alternatives, something offered on their email. They said they have already put me on the only possible flight that day they are now operating from Dublin to Birmingham. So the only possibly 'alternative' I potentially have is the right to cancel the flight and get a refund for that delayed element . But then they said they class the flights from USA to Dublin to Birmingham as one ticket and I would lose the USA to Dublin portion and not get a refund on that part which is obviously the larger part!
Anyhow I am thinking if I sit out the 10 hours (5 extra) and still fly with them, am I likely to get some compensation for this incovenience? I've checked Martin's articles and I'm not totally sure how it would pan out for an advanced cancellation where they have put me on a later flight automtically.
I chose them originally because it was a good deal for the price for the journey length... i could have got cheaper flights for this kind of delay..... 5 people is not cheap!
Also will I be able to claim for the whole journey being 5 hours later than expected? Eg. USA to Birmingham and therefore claim more?
Or if the USA to Dublin runs on time as it is expected, only claim for for the last portion (which I think is less of a claim)? As it is treated as 1 ticket I am hoping it will be the former....

EU Compensation is not due if they have given you more than 14 days notice. You should be able to be rerouted but if the flight they have moved you to then there may not be any other options. Is there any other options for your USA departure airport to Birmingham?0

So long as they give you at least 14 days notice of the cancellation, and it seems that they have, you are not entitled to compensation at all. There is no delay, unless your newly timed flight is actually delayed on the day0
