Santa Eulalia would be the best resort for you. Some of the other places will be slowing down and shutting, but S.E is a working town where lots of people live. It is my favourite place on the island and having already been (as usual) in June for two weeks, we have booked a sneaky week in October! It is good for buses and ferry boats to other places on the island. I can give you advice on accomodation if you need it.

October will be difficult to predict where weather is concerned, and can be mixed. As you are going at the end of the month, it is even more likely to be a bit of everything! As for accomodation, are you looking at apartments or hotels and what is your budget? We love the Sirenis Club Siesta hotel which is all-inclusive and available through First Choice, Travel Republic and various other companies. Any chance you can go a bit earlier? If weather is really important to you, then I agree that the Canaries would be better.

Thanks for your reply ibizafan. We can't change our dates with work.
We are looking at h/b or all inc hoping to keep it around £400ish.
We're not bothered about scorching sun but would like to be able to go out without a coat.
We also looked at Tenerife and it was £500+-£600+ for either of these. We haven't been there but the north was cheaper. Don't know about the resorts there either.have to do some research.
Wondering if the prices for the canaries will go up or down if we wait a few weeks.

Avoid the north of Tenerife. Cloud cover from Mt Teide often turns into rain.

Price up Fuerteventura. Longer hours of sun. Less cloud and rain. AI should come in at around £500-£650pp.

Don't know what the weather will be like in October, but the Ses Estaques (sp) hotel in Santa Eulalia is nice.
Take a look at Thomsons brochure.
    Normal people worry me.

I've been to Ibiza the last week of October and the weather was really good: Sunny beach weather during the day but a little chilly in the evenings. A cardigan was needed.

We stayed in San Antonio and travelled around the island. Most places were shut for the Winter and the beach at San Antonio isn't the best IMO. Loved Playa d'en Bossa beach.

The Ses Estaques is lovely but very pricey. Others to look at are the Tres Torres and the Riomar which has the best location of all the hotels in Santa Eulalia, but has no aircon which wouldn't bother you in October. Prices are very reasonable for both. Playa den Bossa is my least favourite resort in the whole of Ibiza. Lovely beach it might have BUT it is on the flight path to the nearby airport, and out of season it is like a ghost town because nobody lives there. I was in Ibiza in February and Santa Eulalia was buzzy even at that time of year because of the resident population.

I looked at the Sirenis club siesta and it is £398pp all inc which seems good.
Do you know of the Invisia hotel la cala. That is£380pp h/b.
Grupotel Santa Eulalia is £388 h/b.
