Off-topic, I know - but:).
I've had my current iron 18 months (high end Bosch), previous one lasted over 3 years (high end Phillips - but wasn't that keen on it), one before that lasted over 6 years  (Tefal high end).
Looking at that, I hope my iron life cycle isn't deteriorating.
I do iron almost everything I wash (including bedding) but not towels/underwear.
I can't get on with cheap irons, my Mum's value Tesco one does my head in.0 -

6 years!!!! That is an achievement. I was going to say I've had mine since the day I left for uni which is about 6 years but after a bit of thought it is highly debatable how much I actually used it for the first 3 years of its life...First home purchased 09/08/2013

I can understand why Stephb's irons don't last long but I seems to have good luck with most appliances (she says, touching wood
).

6 years, goodness! I could only dream of that.
I think my last £80 was a Bosch, the one I have at the moment is a Tefal, but they still don't seem to last that much longer than the cheapies.
I wonder if it's the way I iron? I tend to do it all in one go on a Sunday afternoon for 2-3 hours and sometimes a half hour here and there during the week. Perhaps if I spread it out more they would last longer?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

That's nothing!
My old microwave (Comet's own make) lasted over 20 years - and it had quite a lot of use.
It was a bit of a shock when we bought the replacement and realised just how heavy the old one was.
The scrapman said 'They don't make them like this anymore' as he walked down the drive, bow-legged under the weight. :rotfl:0 -
Blimey... handbags in here!
All we've established is that some people find something offensive, and others don't. In other words, human nature.
And that new expensive irons only last 18 months!0 -

A topic closer to my heart than irons. :rotfl:Gordon_Hose wrote: »All we've established is that some people find something offensive, and others don't. In other words, human nature.

I get bored of ironing so I tend to do it in 1 hour chunks.
Maybe that's my secret.
I do read reviews before buying though.
My Bosch was £79.99 everywhere except Amazon, I paid £58.19.
I lurve a bargain.
I really like the Tefal soleplate but the 2 I've had blew up (admittedly one did last 6 years) and from reading reviews on Amazon, it was a common complaint.0 -
Perhaps you ought to take a look at yourself and wonder what makes you so immediately suspicious and doubtful with no evidence that indicates the OP wasn't being truthful.
Maybe she has worked in a front of house retail environment and knows what it's like. You certainly haven't or if you claim you have your memory is very rose tinted!0 -
Did somebody mention handbags?
A topic closer to my heart than irons. :rotfl:
Now, buy a decent hand bag and that WILL last a lifetime, far more sensible to spend money on handbags than irons.I get bored of ironing so I tend to do it in 1 hour chunks.

Maybe that is the answer.
I'm fussy with soleplates, I had one once, I can't remember what make, but it was a lovley pearly white, glided like a dream, the one I have at the moment is grey non-stick, not bad, but nothing as good as the pearly white.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

I've only ever bought one iron - a Phillips - cost £20 about 11 years ago and still going strong. Though to be fair I probably iron less than the average person! My new Beko washing machine is great, it has a "shirts" function so all my shirts come out crease free and no need to iron them any more0 -
