My elder son is 18 (19 next week). He passed his test in Feb 2012. We recently decided to buy him a car. We set ouselves a budget of £4k for car and insurance having read about the likely cost of insurance we anticipated that car and insurance would cost roughly half the budget each. However, in May we bought him an 06 plate Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol. The car cost £2800, insurance was £950 (in his name but with myself and OH as named drivers). RFL was £200 and we still had enough in our budget for a tank of petrol.

If that is fully comp, I want to know the company. My son has a 1.0 ie Uno which cost him £245. The insurance (absolute cheapest he could find) is £2,300.

The fact they have put two experienced named drivers down will of bought the premium down a lot.

The OP in this thread, neither parent drives, so with no named drivers. I dread to think what the insurance will be on an A3 sport.

I suspect the word 'Sport' will lead to some quite exciting insurance quotes there...

Unless you have money to burn, you simply cannot look at first car options without factoring in insurance costs. As others have said, this can cost more than the car. Start using price comparison websites to give you quotes for cars you are considering. Then have a lie down / stiff drink as suits!

We looked across the range for my daughter who's 18. We went for untrendy 'family' cars like Volvos and Toyotas, down to really old cars, and the usual young driver cars, too.

The cheapest were the Ka and the Lupo. She ended up with a Lupo.

Blimey. That's good. Who was it with and did you add anyone or do anything to get it so low?

Quote was from Privilege. Not sure if it's cheaper because he's done the Pass Plus course?

Why? They consider the main driver when quoting ( I was told). Also, you have to be careful about 'fronting'. If the put son down as a second or non-main driver (for example), that could invalidate the insurance.

In my son's case, we did shop around and did include me as a second driver but it didn't make a "considerable" difference at all. However, my insurance covers me to drive it anyway.
