take a reading or look at the bill (actual readings not estimates), an annual metered water bill of £510 (160 units/year equates to about 9x10 minute showers every day or 60 toilet flushes) is quite high, which could mean you are using a lot of water, or have a leak, or prices in your region are high, or some billing issue (estimated or debts).

Had a look at the bills and can't really understand how but the water provider charges me £16 a mth and the company that deals with sewage etc charges £29 (just gone down this week). Doesn't really make any sense as to why they'd be so different.

if it's due to high water usage, you could look at that.

I presume the car is linked to the 20000 debt. Do you own the car or is it a hire pay monthly job? If not the easy option is to sell the car and buy one for around 5000. Will that not do for your job?
Hiya, sorry if I am wrong.... it says in assets the car is worth £23000, and in HP that you owe £20000 on it. can you not sell it for £23000,pay off the £20000 and buy one for £3000?

You guys do know that it is illegal to sell something that you do not own, and that until the HP is paid off it is owned by the finance company?

Not to mention the grief you would give any poor sod who was daft enough to buy it without an hpi check.

OP, you can do a voluntary termination on the agreement (at any time) and liability is limited to 50% of the total amount. At the halfway stage that should mean that you can exit without penalty. Earlier than that, do it if you have to and chuck the shortfall in with your other non-priority debts.

Better that than missing the mortgage payment or not having enough to heat/eat.

Thanks, I had read somewhere else it was illegal to sell, sadly I'm a fair way off half way but will seriously look into it when I get there. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I knew what would happen with work I would not have made the purchase

Thank you for letting me know :) my macbook is under a year old so the repair was free, it was just the petrol getting to the local store & parking that cost....

I thought that the cost of the sewage would be similar to the cost of providing the water. I think when my eldest goes that bill should go down a bit (a third would be nice but unlikely I guess). It'll be one less person who baths/showers and less clothes washing etc.... thank you for the advice

Could you store it at your bank instead? >>>
    QUOTE]

Don't know whether this has already been mentioned but re the jewellery. Even if you store it at a bank, you have to have it on your household contents insurance. Otherwise it won't be insured.

So as the bank would cost around £30 per annum plus £10 each access, this would just add to costs. All be it - it would offer peace of mind from burglary.

Hi, the car was 23,000 new just a couple of mth ago (before I knew about job loss). I would prob only get about 17-18k if I sold it now because of initial depreciation

Could you get a short term loan from your ex husband, pay off the HP on your millstone of a car and having already set up a buyer, quickly sell the car. Then pay back your ex and buy a car for a more realistic amount - say £3000 to 5000 for something economical and reliable. ?

have also looked into getting a lodger but not happy having a stranger in the house with a 15 yr old girl in the house.
Have you thought about approaching local schools to see if any new staff need need a place to lodge. That way you know the lodger will be CRB checked and might even help your daughter with her school work! Even if you only have the lodger for a short while at least it will be a little extra.
  • Have I missed something here? You live in a house with about £300000 equity, received an inheritance to buy your husband out, are buying a new car worth £23000, have a MacBook under a year old and are getting £700 a month in benefits. How does that work?
