Oh, I'm all nostalgic now about heading off to uni! Good job I've got 5 years to prepare for DS leaving, I'll be the stereotype mum crying as we leave him in dorms !!
Completely agree with Kerri's suggestions - only extra ones from me are
- frying pan - for fried egg sarnies or stir fry's
- something for leftovers - food bags/tubs. If they can double as microwave containers, there might be a microwave in the dorms these days, and saves on washing up
- if he's in dorms, and the room's en suite, does he need loo rolls as well? No such luxury in my day, communal loos, what a joy!
My mum did a series of cookery lessons as well - just the basics such as scrambled eggs (nowadays I'd teach how to do them in a microwave but they hadn't been invented back then!), fish fingers, mash, how to peel veg etc. She also took me on a trial run around the supermarket, where I learnt the canny art of checking at the back of the shelves for longer use by dates (!) maybe also how to rummage through the 'whoopsie' shelves for bargains, and how to keep track of how much your buying so its not a surprise at the till (if she'd taught me that way back then I might not have half the debt I've got now!)
Hope it all goes well!LBM Dec 2013, Total Debt £31,992.06 Debt Free Date June 20220 -
#18 today, which means I've reached my target.I'll have a think about increasing it.:)
beanie Belated Happy Birthday wishes!!!
Can your son cook basic meals. You could maybe show him a few things.
How is he with money management? When I left home to study,I was clueless and lived off porridge for over a month because I was terrified of running out of money. That changed once my flatmate arrived and introduced me to pubs....:o
I wish someone had told me about budgeting and basic money management.0 -

couldn't agree more about the money management - I am ashamed to admit I didn't know the difference between my credit and debit cards when I first got them
Good shout about the frying pan Suzie. Oh, and perhaps (but not essential) a mixing bowl of some kind and an egg cup or two.
I must say I think hob scrambled eggs are better / easier to do - microwave ones are fine but it's so easy to overcook them.
And yes, loo rolls - how on earth could I forget those!:eek:
Luckily I had been well trained by my mum about checking dates on shelves. Although the ones at the back aren't always the best, they should be - but it depends who stacked the shelves.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Have got a great thing which is a measuring jug/mixing jug in one.
Looks good.
Am very fast running out of pennies but was worried that I had missed some really important things.
Certainly not buying a laundry bag~an ikea bag will do
Hoping his tea towels will double up as oven gloves :eek:I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. Yep, it is expensive Beanie. Deff see what you have at home that he can take, check freecycle and look at the student / value ranges in Tacto etc for things like plates. also have a wee look in the charity shops to see what they have.
Oh, just thought - he'll need towels too.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Hmmm...errr....well...basin tap is still dripping at the pipe and despite me and OH best efforts we can't undo the nut to redo it (even with a basin wrench) but I think the cold tap on the bath is also slightly off so going to have to get the guy back to do those i reckon. However, it seems that the pond under the bath is drying so fingers still crossed it wasn't a more serious leak than 'no overflow connection' Haven't turned the lights back on downstairs yet though. Want to start cleaning up but can't really do that as yet.
Errrr...did I miss a birthday somewhere along the way?x
