morning all - up with the larks again today awaiting the builders again .... still no sign but guess it's early yet. Although they did say they would be here just after 8 - Grrrrrr.

Still, at least it means I'm up and can head out to get a few bits done while OH stays at home on builder watch.

...update, they are apparently picking up materials and on their way....

Yes they did - brickwork foundations laid outside, my poor lavender is squished under a pile of soil  and hopefully bricks being done tomorrow / Mon.

Had some plumbing work done too - which seems to now have resulted in downstairs electrics leaking water and upon inspection, it seems the overflow of our bath was not connected  AND there is a hole in the floor under the bath :eek: What I think / hope has happened is when we've had baths and the water has overflowed, it's pooled under the bath and now the disturbance of new taps has tipped the water onto the elecs / ceiling below (can now see a water make in the hallway...that was painted a few months ago :() Lights turned off at the fuse now downstairs, and I've pushed the overflow pipe onto where it should go - might seal with some elsc insulating tape to secure it. I HOPE that it's just that, it will dry out - we can cover the hole with something better than what was there (big spontex pad and a piece of wood) and that is the end of it. _pale_ Please keep everything crossed.

Most important things for DS to take to uni?

Is DS in catered halls or self catering?

It's been a while since I went, and until you mention about catering etc, I'll leave that however, on the list apart from kitchen:
    • Bedding (two sets) (plus duvet / pillow etc)
    • Washing powder / liquid
    • Supply of toiletries
    • Laptop and cable (didn't have one in my day though :p)
    • Relevant personal numbers / ID / paperwork - such as national ins number, back details / contact phone numbers. Oh and passport photos - I know a lot of things are done electronically these days but better safe than sorry
    • Photos of home
    • First aid items

Those were off the top of my head, have a look at this site - seems to be quite good

    http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/What_To_Take_To_University

If DS isn't in catered accomodation, i highly recoomend the book 'How to Boil an Egg' by Jan Arkless. My mum gave it to me before i went off to uni and it's still one of my most referred to cook books

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Boil-Egg-Jan-Arkless/dp/0716022206

Wow, I feel old now thinking how long ago it was since i went....

    Good Afternoon Folks,

No NSD for me today, as I have already been to do a football bet, which I like to do on a Saturday:)
I am going out later also, so am writing today off! I bought some half price steak today in a local shop and am making chilli barbecue beef for the freezer:). I tend to do lots of shopping in there thesedays, as meat is reduced to half price on the day of the use by date and I cook something with it:D. I must confess to having become a use-by date watcher though:p
I am also making dark and white chocolate brownies!
Kerri, I hope your builders turned up and are working hard
Marmite, I hope Donkey training gets easier, as my body hurts at times:cool:
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and manages to grab NSDs:)
If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

    £2 savings jar £300:D
Total credit card debts £1250:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: - Will I ever learn!!

Deff invest in the cook book then :D

In that case (thinking back to what I took)
    • basic set of saucepans (2 / 3 should do)
    • oven tray / roasting dish
    • crockery
    • cutlery
    • basic set of utensils
    • chopping board & knives (paring, bread and carving should do)
    • bottle opener / corkscrew
    • can opener
    • t-towels & oven gloves
    • pyrex dish (square is good if he does something like a lasagne which is easy and cheap)
    • toaster (if there isn't one in his halls)
    • Washing up liquid & scourers

dont' worry too much about glasses, we used to pinch ours from the pubs :rotfl:

Food wise make sure he has lots of tins, packets and dry stuff (I must admit to many a midnight snack of Smash!) - incl pasta, rice, tins of beans, jars of sauces, tuna and the like (you know what he'll eat) and:
    • salt & pepper
    • worcester sauce (fav from uni was this added to beans for beans on toast etc)
    • perhaps a tub of 'basics' herbs
    • ketchup / HP
    • jam / marmalade / honey / peanut butter / marmite (whatever he usually eats along these lines)
    • sugar (if he takes it)
    • tea / coffee
    • powdered milk

I used to have a couple of banana boxes with most of my tins / dry food in kept under the bed in my room. Think it did me most of my second term at uni in 1st year so only had to buy fresh stuff.

When he goes i wouldn't worry about sending him off with too much fresh stuff, with all that partying in freshers week so it may well get forgotten and spoil. Milk, bread, butter, cheese, perhaps some apples & potatoes as these are heavy to carry.

Perhaps also get him into the kitchen before he goes so he has a couple of basic recipes under his belt if he's not Jamie Oliver at the moment :rotfl: Quick and easy things like tuna pasta melt, pasta with sauce and hot dogs, spag bog, lasagne, macaroni cheese and an easy curry.

If he has a freezer, you could send him off with some HM freezer meals that he just needs to heat up. Then he can re-use the tubs himself for leftovers etc.

I was in self catering from the off and manged fine (though it was a flat of girls and perhaps we were a little more domesticated :rotfl:)

Have a look on Freecycle / Freegle for some crockery / pans and the like.
