As ever, it's true value is what it would cost to replace, not the cost of repairs versus market value.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Why cant you sell it, lots of people out there including myself like to tinker, I often pick up cars past there best and with issues, the large portion of fixing costs is labour, if a home mechanic is after a project they'll offer you more than scrap normally, or if there's some value in the car, strip off the good parts and weigh the rest in for scrap, with wiper motors seat belts, bla bla its all £20 here £30 there and soon add's up.0

thanks...a very practical solution.0

Sell, it whole, don't be tempted to break it yourself.
What happens is you sell the useful breakable bits very quickly, then you are left with 75% of the car sat in your garden, then you have to pay to get it collected as there is little profit left in it for recyclingI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Sell it on ebay for spares or repair. Obviously state what is wrong with it, and that it is sold as seen. You may get more than scrap value this way.0

friend of mine just broke up a astra G 1.4. 16v failed mot on various bits cat rear bushes etc, sold engine for £250 recent timing belt and waterpump and aux belt, gearbox for £180 ish, light units front and rear £15 each, dash+ steeringwheel with airbags and airbag module+seats and pretensioners and seatbelts £200 there abouts, calipers £10 each front, hubs £35 each front, drive shafts £15 each, coil over kit £120, rear high line spoiler £45, bumpers £20 each scrap man had the radiator and aircon rad and front end (he cut the front frame away from light to light to get engine out) subframe £50 ish with steering rack, doors (4door) with electrics £20 each, front wings £15 each, bonnet £40, skirt mouldings with clips and jack caps £25 the pair, boot lid £40 with wiper motor minus the lock barrel, keys x2 with wiring loom and ECU and barrels fuse box £75 with key barcode card, VX manual and leather case and vx stickers £20, vx stereo CD RDS unit with manual and code £45, vx alloys £25 a wheel with decent tread, spare £15, locking nuts and key £15, parcel shelf £10. all went within 5 weeks at all stages photo's taken with dates on, vehicle dismantlers came and collected FOC and gave destruction notice as the "car" had its VIN (that we drilled off the front panel before scrap man had it) numberplated.
hey paid roughly £900 for it 2 years ago plus his part ex, sold for bits roughly £1500, retained allot of clips and screws in tupperware boxes for future use, strip down took roughly 2 weeks. scrap value £170 at a push. theres money in used car parts if you have the room and time and price yourself for what you want to let items go for, most was sold locally through FB swap shops some were fleabayed with local collection only, engine was picked up by a guy in warrington who drove his works van down, the gearbox was arranged courier by the highest bidder on fleabay to go to west wales.0 -
it takes half a day to strip a car of the parts that are worth a few pennies, check ebay and you'll be surprised what parts go for on an individual basis, they always break so there's a demand, hence all these breakers yards springing up and doing well, a scrappy will come and lift your car on to a truck fill in the yellow part of the log book and job done, if your not leaving it a roller just make sure you strip where a truck can recover it, well worth doing, or get it on ebay for spares repair, let someone make there own mind up on it, scraps about £100-120 for average sized car, you'd get that for wheels and tyres alone, or twice that on ebay
I have done maybe 10 cars now and never struggled, as the above post has it split and it add's up, I've brought a few cars, luckily for me I know a bit, bit once got an impreza for 400 and the parts were special and broke it and had it all cleared for 3300 in 5 days, sad but I like to take apart and hate to build.0 -
You want to turn your home into a scrap merchants , feel free .0

the small parts are literally small and costly, everyone's different, but to save or gain money why throw away working parts for someone else to gain from, negativity gets people no where.0
