Add in homophobia, racism and sexism in abundance and it wasnt the place for me.0 -

I've been to all the continents except Antarctica (one day!) and South America is certainly my favourite. It is however fairly dangerous in parts, there is more of a language barrier than anywhere else I've been and it can be expensive, with some places costing more than you'd spend in London. I can see why most people generally hit Asia instead.
I also loved Oz to the point I'm considering living there for a bit in the future but it is fairly similar to the UK, probably not the place to go if your looking for a different experience.
Another vote for Burma (Myanmar) too. Very warm friendly people, some great customs and despite the reputation of it's neighbours I think it has the best temple sights in South East Asia. It was very cut off from the World but it's now starting to catch up. At the moment it's very authentic but in 5 years time it'll be very tourist oriented and I'd imagine will have a similar feel to Thailand. Therefore I really think the time to go is now. They only got their first ATM this year, can't really argue with that!
India is also well worth a visit and very rewarding. However it's an extremely difficult country to travel in and certainly not a place for the novice traveller.
Have fun

hi. What an awesome trip you'll be able to have!
MSE has so much good info.
My wife and I went for 4 months last december. We went the opposite way round to most, flew into LA, drove to vegas and grand canyon and up to san fran via highway 1. Epic. So much better than we expected. Possibly too pricy on your own. Then NZ, epic epic epic. Then OZ east coast. Wonderful. Depends on what type of person you are as to what places are unmissable!
Couple of things we found most useful:
- Halifax Clarity credit card. Perfect exchange rate, no atm fee. Used it in US, NZ, AUS, Singapore, Thailand.
- Get a back pack which opens like a suitcase, not a top loading one. Really made a difference. Bag clothes up in plastic bags together (i.e. bag of t-shirts, bag of pants, bag of trousers). Easier to pack, easier to sort through quickly.
- We got a couple of washing lines that don't need pegs (see amazon). Come with hooks and suction cups. Really useful, take up no space.
Also, we trawled groupon well in advance of each city. Got some hotels for the price of hostels, whale watching trips, bike hire etc cheap. Gotta be sure of your dates though and t + c's.
Finally, somebody mentioned a multi stop flight for 4k! Crikey. We went with STA travel. They did ours for 1600 each and that was expensive due to late booking and going the opposite way round to most. The flight were with NZ airways and Emirates. Proper luxury.
and for a max of 150 quid extra (I think, no more) you could alter the dates of all the flights as much as you liked, within a certain time frame. Amazing
Have an awesome time0 -
If you want to see America i'd suggest possibly working at a summer camp if you would enjoy it. I worked at 1 for 2 summers in America and 1 in Canada for a summer and it helped immerce you into a different culture as well as meet people from different areas. it depends where you go as some camp staff will allow you to stay at theres along the way. i know i visited a friend on my way back from Canada to have a catch up. You get back pretty much what you spend out when its all totalled up but it means you see something different but get food, 'pocket money' and a whole new experience. I went through CCUSA as at the time they were the cheapest but there are several companies out there.
I've also travelled around Thailand, Maylasia and Singapore 2 years ago with a friend for 6 weeks. Would totally recommend Singapore as on Sentosa island you can dive with sharks, theres a disneyland and all sorts. Definately one of my favourite places and I got return flight for under 420 via Jordon.
Australia is on my list of places to go to though before i'm 30:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one
