claiming income support

He will be abroad for a full year without return. We will visit him instead when possible. I'd really appreciate it if people could not judge and just answer the question if possible.
This is something we feel passionately about and a joint decision. I am just exploring my options at the moment. If my 2 year old was at school I would get a job and study part-time, but I can't afford childcare and train. I just want to know if I will be able to claim income support for the interim. If not, I need to explore other options and this is something we would discuss. Nothing is set in stone. We are still discussing and exploring our options.
Can't answer for other benefits but tax credits allow a single claim due to time away. So you'd get full tax credits.0 -
Thanks princessdon. I hope someone knows about income support and can answer

can he not wait until you start work, surely that would be the sensible and responsible thing to do for his family. And how do you propose to pay to travel out to see him ?I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

The opportunities don't often come up and it can be a career boost. My OH worked for a company that did 7year itches. Every 7 years they got 3 months salary to devote to charity, he did it twice. Once following a well known natural disaster where he helped remove rubble and build and once to build IT systems in a 3rd world school.
No benefits involved, but it was amazing for him personally and career.
If the moral argument here is life choices and benefits then every person who makes such a decision whether to have another child, study, work claiming expensive chikdcare is the same.
Just my personal opinion though.0 -

Organisations like VSO are always likely to find a placement for a qualified nurse so I don't understand why you think that this is an unusual opportunity.0 -

The vso and other orgs are always screaming out for volunteers so not exactly a shortage of opportunities. He has responsibilities and imho feel that for the sake of what remains of the course until the job that is lined up he will for all intent and purposes leave op destitute, where are the morals in that ? he is being selfish putting his aspirations over the needs of his family.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
If this isn't a wind up then I would consider this 'man' to be a prize plonker, abandoning his family which includes a disabled wife and a 2 year old kid so he can go away for a year on some self fulfilling sabbatical.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

It's often work choice, unless OP's job will always allow a year off.
It's just how I feel, people take the pee with public funding left right and centre. Op Is asking not "pretending to split up", I just can't help being supportive, as feel there's more worth in this than 6 kids created on benefits.
I'm a sucker for charity sadly!0 -
I don't think anybody is going to be able to answer your question about Income Support.
I would expect the decision to go to a Decision Maker as to whether you could be classed as a lone parent.
Having said that ( and maybe someone else would confirm) I would not be surprised if it was considered that you purposely deprived yourself of income in order to claim benefits.0
