It maybe cheaper than the smax but the residuals will hit the floor after a few years where as the smax will still be worth a few quid.

To be honest that back seat looks well cramped in the mazda 5 pic above! My smax has 3 proper size middle seats which all move independently from each other and also have the benefit of reclining backwards to if a child wants to sleep on a long journey.

S-Max used values are very strong, but the Mazda5's also hold up very well. They certainly don't 'hit the floor' - this is a decent quality Japanese car after all. If you compare to the French alternatives, it holds up very well.

The point of the photo was to illustrate the fact that it is possible to fit the 3 seats in the middle row - whereas I've seen quite a few threads here and elsewhere that imply that its just not possible.

The Mazda middle seats also recline and have the captain chairs arms.

The photo does make it look fairly cramped - in reality there is plenty of room there for 3 kids to sit in those seats. More room than in our Civic, where you just wouldn't get the seats in.

Don't forget that the S-Max is based on a much bigger car (a Mondeo) whereas the Mazda5 is based on the Mazda3 platform (which is Focus based). This means it is cheaper, lighter and with the 1.6 diesel, is pretty efficient. Is great alternative if you don't have the money for an S-Max, like a driver's cars, and don't want something French - or a drab Zafira.

The Sport is a nice place to be as well - all leather interior, and electric sliding doors which is great with kids in a car park.

I agree about the Mazda being a nice place to be. I had a 2010 mazda 6 sport estate with full leather and bose etc. lovely motor. Let down buy some poor quality parts and paint work !
