advice needed! are rated people genuine?

Hi there

Im a recent first time buyer, who contacted a company via rated people to do some decorating.

Small bedroom needs wallpaper stripping, textured wallpaper hanging then painting.

Recieved a quote for the above and went ahead with the work

Problem is, at the end of day 1, I noticed none of the existing wallpaper was stripped and the new paper was just stuck above. New wallpaper is not sticking properly and coming away from walls. (Due to the shiny paint on lining paper underneath no doubt)

Workmen have been asked if they encountered any problems however they lied and said the removal of the existing wallpaper was easy!!!

I did not expect this from a rated people website and wondered what I should do? Should I pack their stuff and tell them not to bother?

Anyone had issues with rated people?

Thanks in advance

Day 2 is tomorrow, should I tell them not to come back?

some good people on there & some bad, no different from looking through the yellow pages, i have been on there & got some good jobs, recommendation is always the best way to go,

I would just come out & tell them what you have found & that you aren't going to pay the bill until the job is done properly, at least that way they know that they can't bodge it & hopefully you will get a decent job done, but don't pay any money until the job is finished & you are completely happy
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Personnally I wouldn't let them through the door again. From what you have said (and there are always two sides to a story) they've lied to you and bodged the job. There can be no trust that the job can be correct now.

As a matter of interest how big is the room and how much is the contract worth?

    Cheers

Any tradesperson can advertise on Rated People, anyone at all, and never believe all reviews either.

Which Magazine lists tradesmen and they're usually spot on. I would never use ratedpeople
  • Thanks for the advice.

I rang them up this morning, and asked if they could explain. Which they couldn't.
Then they sheepishly came to collect thier things, and apologised for messing things up.

First time and last time I use rated people.

I'm in London where rated people is a lottery. You can get some good recommendations on Mumsnet.

My experience with CheckABodger is that some members are very good, some are incompetent and dishonest and you will end up taking them to court. How do you tell which is which? The reviews are not a good guide.

corrected that, as far as i know you don't have to provide any details for the rated trdesmen site other than a couple of "customer" reviews, so it must be open to abuse ,
if you are a decent genuine tradesperson , you will have plenty of work without the need to advertise on thse sites ,

, the best way to find someone is thru neighbours , work colleagues and friends , or go to your local builders merchants .
  • I posted a small job I wanted doing on ratedpeople.com. According to the email I received, 40 tradesmen looked at my advert, but only 1 wanted to quote. Turned out the tradesman was based 50 miles away so didn't bother with further contact. His traveling time/petrol would have ended up being built into the quote sending it way over budget.

    Waste of time.

I would take photos of their work incase they try to invoice you in a few months.
  • Like said previously some good some bad.

I know through the odd quiet time we have used ratedpeople to obtain work, although it isn't something that is used on a daily basis like alot of business's I know on it.
