It is not the norm to take things like travelers cheques and pre-pay cards and things?

The banks still do travellers cheques?

On the rare times I've been abroad, I have relied on credit or debit cards. But I have more than one of each.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Just been to Mexico for 2 weeks - didn't tell my bank I was going and I used my card on 4 occasions while I was there without any problems

Shouldn't have tried using your card 36 times in that renowned ladyboy bar.

depends on the bank and depends on the transaction
my bank (RBS) you don't have to tell that you're going away but they will still block your card for a transaction that's at a high risk of fraud
in my case they was fine with me paying for things in New York - meals, attraction tickets, the deposit at the hotel etc, but blocked it when I tried to use the ATM in Macdonald's across the road from the hotel- only used that one as I'd read they had the cheapest fees, but the little stand alone ATMs are easy to tamper with so it was a 'risky' transaction and they blocked my card.

Can't say I've had any problems with LloydsTSB - tell them which cards, country and dates and they send me an SMS whenever the card is used asking me to let them know if it's not me. Works pretty well.
  • I've got to admit, when travelling I always make sure I have more than one means of paying. Op maybe a good idea to do this in future.

I have heard of this happening to our service men and women serving out in Afghanistan, despite informing their bank of their posting. The problem then is that they don't have enough telephone allowance to spend the time on hold waiting to speak to someone back in the UK. I know of one person who paid for something in the navvi by card 2 weeks after arriving for a six month tour, only to have their card stopped and account frozen until they were able to come home. They had to rely on family sending out cash for 6 months.
