Buying a house with previous movement

We are first time buyers and property we are buying had a recent survey done by the lender bank a week back which showed two issues, the house had experienced a past movement but no on-going movement recorded. Also it mentioned about front walls dampness and possible timber defectiveness and suggestion to have detailed investigation through a relavant engineer for timber.

Now bank has approved mortgage but we are a bit concerned about the movement issue. When asked from the surveyor, she said its a ground movement and floors are uneven. But she said property had movement in past but not recent.

We called a home insurance company which knowing about movement, refused to offer insurance.

We are thinking that as a couple we are putting both our lives savings to buy a house for us, so is it worth buying this property considering that our home insurance will be with high premium and we will have trouble selling this property too, or we should drop this deal and go ahead to look for another property?
Is the ground movement a common thing? I have seen cracks around windows in almost every other property i have viewed... What are your suggestions?

  • Was it movement that required remedial work such as underpinning? Or was it merely evidence of settling or some movement that is not progressive? Many very old houses show some signs of old movement that does not necessarily mean 'subsidence' which would require remedial work.

    If your lender is willing to lend I would imagine that the surveyor didn't think it was anything to worry about; however, if the property had required underpinning that may be a different matter.
