I can't really take any credit for it other than I found it a few weeks ago on another forum and have booked a car for Oct with it.

Check it includes mileage and one way drop off fees in the small print.0

It's fine entering any old contract code and getting a discounted rental, fine that is until you get to the service desk to collect your car and they ask for proof that you are elligible for the promotion concerned.
National code 5000491 is specifically for students and staff of certain Ohio universities,

and if when collecting yuur car, you are asked for and unable to prove that you qualify, you should expect to be charged the highest possible walk in rate going.0 -
There's plenty of people on the thread linked that seem to have done OK with that code.
I'm chancing it, it's easy enough to have another deal booked as a backup if it all goes pear shaped and they refuse you.0 -

If it helps, National have a $250 (plus numerous taxes) limit for on way hires.

Really? I'll go take a look at that
Also checkout https://www.alamo.co.uk/brits.
Their one way is $300 plus tax, but the discount may offset this.0
