Chicken and rice for a poorly puppy tummy?

Hi everyone. Well, after saying the other day that my puppy has never had a bad tummy, guess what ... he has a bad tummy! We put the Advocate worming/flea stuff on him last night and the vet says it won't be anything to do with that so maybe he's just eaten something in the garden that doesn't agree with him. He's had diarrhoea (sp?) this morning and was sick once, but has been fine during the day, albeit a bit more sleepy than usual but not overly upset or unhappy.

We haven't fed him since 7am (which he vomitted up anyway) and were told to leave it 12 hours before giving him any food again.

When I get home I plan to boil some chicken breasts, then cook some white rice in the chicken water and give him a bit of that, with enough made up to give him little and often tomorrow too. I know not to use any seasonings at all when cooking but if anyone has any tips please let me know! What sort of measures of chicken and rice would you give? Many thanks.

It could well be something to do with the fleaing. The vet probably doesn't want to encourage you to not flea/worm! I would say don't use Advantage again, go for an alternative.

I personally don't give chicken and rice, mine were always soft if they ate that. Ratio etc wouldn't really matter that much and you can always try the likes of scrambled egg as well (no cow's milk).

You can literally give him a tablespoon, see if he keeps it down then give him another couple tablespoons a half hour to an hour later etc. I don't know how old he is but providing he is not sick tonight I would probably just stick with 3-4 small ish meals tomorrow and if he's solid look at getting him back on his normal food.
  • Thanks for your reply. I got the name wrong of the worming stuff - it's Advocate. What worries me about that stuff is that we had the does suitable for puppies up to 4kg, but he's literally half that weight. So, in effect, he's getting double the dose of a 4kg puppy. Can't believe it's just a massive coincidence that the first time he has an upset tummy is the day after we administer this stuff on his neck??

Anyway, he's fasted all day and was sat in the kitchen dribbling while I boiled some chicken breasts then cooked white rice in the chicken water. We didn't give him loads, but he wolfed it down!! He's fine tonight but I've cooked enough chicken and rice for him to have just that tomorrow, plus some little chicken bits to use as treats when he goes for a wee or poo outside (we still need to positively reinforce that but I want to make sure he has a "bland food" day tomorrow!)

I didn't know about the cows milk thing. I've read so many things that say a dog with tummy problems can have white rice with cottage cheese or even just plain yoghurt?

Is it normal to feed a dog rice.

Just curious, not judging at all.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It's certainly not unusual for dogs with sensitive tums and chicken with rice seems to be the bland meal of choice recommended by Vets. My lurcher is extremely sensitive to chicken so was on fish and rice for 3 months due to digestive problems, but we couldn't keep any weight on him. We swapped to mashed potatoes (skin included) with his fish and he held his weight fine. Some people use plain pasta, but that wasn't an option for us as our boy is also gluten intolerant. It was done on Veterinary advice and he was 8 months in total before he got back to ordinary food, but that's far from usual.

skintandscared, if you feed dry food, it's best not to try and put pup straight back on his usual kibble, as it may set him off again. I usually reintroduce the biscuits gradually over a couple of days.
My Vet usually recommends Panacur for worming pups as it's gentler on them. Hope your little man is better soon,

Just to say - we use advocate too - one of our westies is quite big for a westie - the vet once gave us the next dose up (so his weight was the minimum weight for that dose) rather than the usual dose the other westie gets - and he was sick afterwards as well - went straight back to usual dose after that and he has been fine with it as before.

It probably is to do with the flea and worming treatment so don't worry too much.

You can do chicken and rice, or plain scrambled egg with no butter/milk etc. That's what the vet told me to feed Lenny when I brought him home from his tail amputation as it's very bland.
  • Thank you so much for the reassurances everyone! He was bouncy as a little lamb again this morning and poo was pretty much back to normal thank goodness. He is having a day just on the chicken and rice today though, and then gradually adding back in his usual food.

Yes, I read a lot about poorly tummies in puppies and white rice with chicken or fish was definitely the biggest recommendation. Brown rice is apparently too high in fibre for their tummies when they are a bit sick.

We normally give him half wet, half dried. He has either Naturediet or Forthglade for the wet, with Arden Grange dried. He seems to like them all, although I have to say I have never seen him go so mad for food than he did with the chicken and rice!! He practically climbed my arm while I was putting it down this morning and polished it off in no time. If it was nutritious enough (which it isn't) and didn't cost about 10x the usual food I would give it to him every day LOL :rotfl:

Glad he is happier. When our pup has been a bit off, we've given him white rice and chicken. He would only eat the chicken and leave the rice though, so we boiled the chicken together with the rice to make chicken flavoured rice and he'd gobble it down!

Thank you. That's what I did with the cooking. I boiled the chicken breasts first, took them out when cooked and left them to cool then tipped the rice into the chicken water and cooked it in that. I did taste the rice and despite there being no seasoning in it, it surprisingly was quite tasty! I think if you use other cuts of chicken you need to skim fat off the water, but there wasn't any on mine. Hubby didn't think he would eat the rice but the bowl was licked totally clean. :j

I did read somewhere yesterday someone said they cooked the chicken and rice all together in a "crockpot". I have a slow cooker so I might try that, but it might be a bit of a pain fishing out all the chicken to shred it down a bit.

And through all this worry you've now discovered something that you can enjoy eating yourself ! :rotfl:
