Just a reminder that if you qualify for a disabled persons railcard (for example if you have a hearing aid) then that's often better vfm as you can take someone with you for the same price.

Maybe its a local arrangement but I paid £20 last year and renewed last week still for £20, I have no disability.
The funny thing is just before I was 60 I got the leaflet from the station and the conductor on the train saw me reading about the senior pass and she told me to go to the council office as it was much cheaper than getting it from the railway station...I thought that was a nice thing to do!!
    I am in East Yorkshire

Will be a "new" pensioner Jan 2014. How does the rail card work please. Also can bus passes be used nationwide.
    Thanks

Here are a couple of bus pass links:

The answer is yes but there is an Irish nation plus a Scottish nation plus a Welsh nation plus an English nation.

Saturday is the best day of the week as there are plenty of buses and no 09:30 start time.

Some local authorities, especially the Mayor of London, have enhanced the national deal, for their local residents.

I have a hierarchy of travel methods
    7 minutes = walk
    25 minutes = bike
6 hours single = bus pass or train
3 hours two people or its Sunday = get the car out.
Leave the country = car ferry or plane

Obviously those are just rough guide lines and relative speeds, baggage and weather conditions have a baring on the decision.

For example in London the bus, using bus lanes, can be faster than a car and does not cost £4 an hour to park.
A bike can be taken on most train journeys.

You mean you used Tesco Clubcard points to buy it (as opposed to spending the points on something else). That's not quite the same as 'free'.
