I drive trucks for a living & know what a retarder is ;) In all the trucks I have driven I have yet to find one where the retarder/engine brake can't be turned off..... automatic or manual.

When driving on slppery surfaces the last thing any driver wants is braking applied to the drive wheels automatically, in fact it's dangerous!

Not when the retarder is combines with traction control, which also works in conjunction with the ABS.

A bit of a clue there if you don't mind me saying ;)

But the information you gave wasn't completely correct was it?

There is a large pdf doc available on line, and it tells you all the possible penalties for both the driver and the operator. The exact possible penalties are in there.

Is that where you get your knowledge from, online? :rotfl:

Like I said, I've yet to drive a truck where the retarder/engine brake can't be turned off.... can you?

Where does it state that you can be prosecuted (through court) for a speeding offence based solely on Tacho evidence?

Don't bother Googling 'cos you won't find it but good luck!

A tachograph isn't approved for the prosecution of speeding offences on it's own but it can be used to corroberate an approved detection device if need be.

This is certainly true in the UK - but there are several EU countries, and beyond, where you can be fined off the tacho, on the spot for an 'offence' committed days before earlier in your journey.

Traffic cops in Germany have amazing tacho readers and they can work out just about exactly where, never mind when, you were over the limit. Anyone can recognise a motorway stretch on a tacho card.

Years ago in Austria their favourite trick for speeding or being over your hours, was not to fine, but to park you up for 24 hours.

There was hell to pay when you got home for that. LOL

The biggest truck he's had control of was made by Tonka.

I'm glad you're spotted the crap he posts too. He'll be calling you a ttroll next.;)

Yes, a Scania, as well as several others.
Just because you haven't driven one doesn't mean they don't exist. It just depends on the exact specification.
With this particular model, the retarder, ABS, ASR, and traction control all work in conjunction with each other. So there is no need whatsoever to turn the retarder off.

I didn't say solely did I? Although I'm pretty sure that VOSA could use it as evidence if needed.

I find it depends what car I'm driving, not what speed I'm doing. If I'm doing 70mph in my 2cv then I will get people tailgating me, but if I'm doing 65 in the clio, it's very rare that I get tailgaters. I can only assume that the cars following me are looking at my car and making assumptions, rather than looking at their speedo to see how fast they're driving.

I did have someone tailgating me when I was in an old works van. I don't know how long he was there as he was so close I couldn't see him in the wing mirrors. Had I known there was a car following me I'd have pulled over to let him past as I was stuck at 45-50 in a 60 limit.

Yes, I absolutely agree with this. I stick to the speed limit (not below!) and am frequently tailgated - I spend most time on road driving in city, often feel like I'm the only one doing 30! Speedo appears to be about right according to satnav.

I drove a clio to begin with, and now drive an aygo. i.e. smaller cars, which I guess are are generally assumed to be driven by women. However, on the rare occasions I drive my partner's big fat citroen picasso, in which I also stick to the speed limit, I don't think I have ever been tailgated/bullied. So there is definitely a link to perception on the part of the tailgater as much as the actual speed the person in front is going.

And as for comments about people being 'bullied' because they are not confident drivers - I am confident, and certainly not easily intimidated, doesn't stop people driving up my backside!! I guess it might depend on where you drive as well - where I live is very bad for tailgaiting (and other generally rubbish/aggressive driving), but have driven in other places where it just doesn't seem to be as much of an issue.

Personally I don't think it matters what you are driving as far as the BMW/Audi drivers are concerned. They will tailgate you whatever you are driving (unless you have a better car than them). ;)

Let me guess. Do you live anywhere near London, or another big city?
