never had a cat flap! only ever had two cats and one was an 'outdoorsy' type the other had to be kept indoors as he was FIV.
not all cats want to be outdoor cats - and FIV cats CANNOT be outdoors cats. but my nicky was perfectly happy to be inside with me or out in the garden with me. he was a very laid back cat!
can I ask that you check out the FIV cats rescues? they need homes badly and many people are scared of having one. no need - they cannot pass on the virus to humans - just other cats.
my own cat seemed to realise he was near death when I found him - and he was the loveliest cat - everyone adored him - I have never ever seen a cat so patient with kids or so 'loving'.

My cats go in and out an upstairs bathroom window which is open year round. Its not as brutal as it sounds, the roof is a gentle slope down from there with a 'cat ladder' of trellis to that roof ( there used to be a jump to a windowsill but the window was replaced with a door.)

we have no cat flap. Our year old tom goes out in the night & when oh gets up he opens the kitchen window, the boy then sleeps all day & when oh gets home from work at 4pm lets him out again, we just leave the window ajar & he comes in & out as he wants until about 10pm when he goes out for the night again. We've tried keeping him in during the night but he annoys us with his moaning, so out he goes, to play, to hunt, to do whatever boycats do!

Oh & forgott o mention, I bought the boy a cat bungalow for when it rains or other bad weather, so he has somewhere to go if need be.

Oh wow my cat would be so jealous, that looks way better than his rabbit hutch! The bottom part is similar to how I did the hutch without the door flaps, I might try to add something like that.

i live in a ground floor flat and my cat goes in and out of the open bathroom window. it's about 6ft from the ground from the outside and he and my previous 2 cats have no problem jumping up.

i think cats will usually find a route to an open window. When i lived with an ex-bf's parents, the cats would jump from window sill to window sill, up onto a flat roof, then onto upstairs bedroom window ledge to get in - they even did this with various wildlife that they had caught in their mouth!
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p

Never had a cat flap and we have the same sort of door. Cat sits by door when wants to go out, vice versa. If it's raining, he has a nice bit of shelter by the back door and will hear us come home and run to us to get in. Indoor cat is definitely another option, but of course some cats can't stand being kept indoors all the time and trying to stop them getting out is a nightmare. If they want to get out, they will get out!

Here is the Summer House we made for Sparky (he is 14 now). Smiler is one of the strays around this area, we do feed him and have tamed him a bit. he has a converted dog house for his official residence, We wont put a collar on him, as he is not friendly and I don't want him spraying in the house. I would love to have him neutered, but I think he is very old, so why cause him the distress of taking him to the Vet.

Perfectly possible to have a cat flap fitted in the door you described. We had it done - very simple but a bit expensive.

A link for you. Get a quote first.

Personally not keen on open windows etc but everyone to their own.

I knocked a hole into the wall instead (well, a friend did!!)! My catflap goes through kitchen wall into the garage, then put one in the wooden door out the back of the garage.
