    So what if the OP should be fairly inexperienced, and by chance doesn't recognise some of the programs? Where's the Fail-Safe in your advice?

    You should only recommend that the OP delete programs which they are certain they don't need - then suggest further that this action is probably a waste of time anyway, unless they are automatically started at boot or logon time. As mentioned above, other unwanted programs are just using up some disk space, of which we have probably lots spare.
