I've been getting it on and off for a long time (as have others).

Sometimes you just need to (as it says) "refresh the page in a few minutes".

Sometimes you need to delete/reset an MSE forum cookie that gets 'scrambled'.
I can't remember which one it is offhand, but if you are fine with editing cookies in your browser you should find it easily enough.

There'll be a thread on it somewhere (probably in this board).

Actually it sounds like you might be experiencing an inconsistent internet connection today. This would result in the page being unavailable occasionally. And often results in you getting a new IP address from your ISP. Which would result in you being logged out as you described.

There are actually a number of reasons why you would become automatically logged out. I appreciate it's irritating but please trust me that they are all there for your security. To protect your account and data :).

But clearing cookies is definitely worth a try as Old Wrinkly suggests. There is a relatively rare issue with users who have been using the site for a long time, ending up huge cookies helping the forums display as you want them to. Deleting these cookies often fixes issues.
