How will tax credits ask to be paid back past the £3k limit?

You need to get a life instead of trolling message boards.
Again I can see nowhere in your post that says you told them anything?

I thought it was fairly obvious I wasn't committing fraud and that I'd told them. I guess I wasn't expecting ill informed trolls to try and claim I was acting fraudulently as I thought that anyone posting on this topic might have a slight clue as to how the tax credits system worked.0 -
fat-pudding wrote: »Hi all,
For the tax year 2012-2013 we were claiming WTC and CTC based on my estimated income for the year. What happened though was in February/March this year I was given a huge pay rise at work with promotion to a management position and also given a large bonus at the same time as my boss felt that I deserved it as I'd been carrying out the position for the past year (although I wish he'd put it into this tax year now!)
Obviously this put my estimated salary that I had given for tax credits out the window somewhat (and already I was going to come in a bit over due to call out fees that I'd already collected!).
Anyway, after the end of year I'm no longer entitled to tax credits and have an overpayment somewhere in the region of £3700.
I'm quite happy to pay this back as quite obviously the money isn't mine but it will be almost impossible for me to pay it back in one lump sum (unless I take out a loan) but I can afford to pay it back over a year.
As yet I've heard nothing about paying it back just a statement of the level of overpayment but I've read for overpayments of this scale they expect the money back in 1 lump sum which is quite simply a no can do for me, are the tax credits people open to negotiations on paying the money back over a year or other period of time?
Nope re-read it a few times now, maybe I have missed the point completely somewhere and as said if I have then please accept my apologies, a troll I am not! However I still cannot see anywhere in this post that says you updated them at the time of your promotion?"You can measure a man's character by the choices he makes under pressure"Sir Winston Churchill0 -

Apology accepted but you need to learn a lesson here, do not think people are trying to do something dodgy or fraudulent when asking for advice for what might be unusual situations. You read into my messages what you wanted to think, that's unacceptable on message boards like money saving expert where people are seeking help. If you honestly believe this is a good way to post on here then it's not, it's childish and silly and makes you look bad.
I already stated I will pay the money back and accept that an overpayment has been made, just due to the circumstances of when and how the pay rise and bonus were paid it meant most of the money had already been paid to me. When they ask for the money back they will get it but as I already said I can't pay it in a single lump sum but can pay back over time.0 -

I know that if your circumstances change to the extent that you go from qualifying for them to not qualifying for them over night then you should really pick the phone up and let them know, again maybe I have this wrong??"You can measure a man's character by the choices he makes under pressure"Sir Winston Churchill0 -

mmmmmmmm
sorry I still cannot see anywhere where you have said you informed them of a huge change in circumstances, I have even put my glasses on now and still cannot see it, feel free to highlight the part of your post that says you did................ I thought it was fairly obvious, why would I have to post that I told them anyway and why would you assume that it was fraudulent if I didn't explicitly say so?
As tax credits are paid April to April in line with the tax year. I think the promotion I got was at the end of February but the money was paid from the March pay roll so a week before end of tax year. At that stage my boss didn't know how much the bonus would be as he needed approval from other directors and the tax credits office can't make any changes until the change has happened.
This meant that I received an entire years tax credits based on an estimate of a much lower salary for 2012-2013 and there was _nothing_ I could have done to predict this (apart from not worked so hard).
If I wanted to have been fraudulent I would have asked for the bonus to be paid into the 2013-2014 tax year so I would have gained more tax credits as the withdrawal rate is somewhere around 80% I would have had £2960 more in my pocket right now.0 -

Argh, so why did you *assume* that I had deliberately misled them? I don't recall my post saying "'I decided to lie about my income figures for an entire year to the tax credits people" either....0 -

I *did* let them know as soon as I had numbers but by then it was the end of the tax year so all the payments had been made (and due to a mistake they made they made a single payment halfway through the year for too much money so they'd reduced later payments), the amount I had to tell them was dependant on the bonus which wasn't confirmed until the end of March and at the time I didn't know if it would be £1k or £10k.
Even if I had have phoned them up and told them on that day it would only have stopped them making a single payment of under £400 as all the other payments had been made earlier in the year.0 -
Look I am not going to argue with you, I can see from your posts that you are sure you have done everything right so in that case there is no need to worry and I am sure under those circumstances they will be as accommodating as they can possible be and agree a payment arrangement with you, I can see from other threads here that when a genuine mistake has happened they do all they can to make things as easy as possible.
I do apologise if my post antagonised you in some way, I was not accusing you of anything however I can see how it may have come across that way, I was more implying that as you have so far not heard anything from them there "may" be an investigation happening or due to happen, £3700 is a big over payment I find it hard to believe they will just say "oh well, sh*t happens"
As said from your posts you seem to have it all figured out so give them a call and ask them? If it were me I would be proactive in getting them to agree to something rather than it all hanging in mid air.
Anyway good luck with it all I hope you get the outcome you are hoping for and congratulations of the promotion
