Feeling very lucky to be alive

A trip to the beach with my sons came very close to ending in disaster yesterday. We had parked up along the seafront at the end of a long row of cars. According to witnesses who saw us head off, the accident happened less than 10 minutes later. A pick up lorry with a hiab crane was speeding along the road. As it came near to my car the hiab, which had not been properly secured by the driver, swung out and smashed through it pushing it along the road into 2 parked cars and up onto a grass verge. The damage done was horrendous, the rear and side windows had been blown out, the front and back were completely crushed, the sunroof had caved in. We arrived back an hour later to see police, ambulance and blood emergency services all around. Whilst they were treating me for shock it was made clear that all I had lost was a metal box. Had we been in the car at the time of impact we would have been lucky to have survived. Sorry to bore you all with all this, I just needed to let it all out somewhere.

Wow, it really does bring it home to you when something like this happens.

We really do all go there by the grace of god (if there is one).

About 7 years ago, my family had a similar experience - a vehicle rammed into a crowd of people, causing the deaths of five people and injuring more. We had quite literally two minutes before been standing at the point of impact. Thinking about it now makes my blood run cold, the sights and sounds I heard that day always do stay with me. Really horrific.

  • Crikey! No wonder you are in shock. Sometimes you can't stop your mind racing with the 'what if's' even though you know everyone is safe.

So pleased that you and your family are all safe.

You must have had such a shock at seeing your car destroyed. You will probably find you keep thinking "what if" it is only natural.

It has completely put my life into perspective that is for sure. My dad and step mum live an hour away but they came rushing over to help and we are staying with them this weekend. I was doing okay till I put my sons to bed last night and then it really hit hard that I came so close to not being able to do that again.

I have sorted everything out through the insurance now and organised a courtesy car till I find a replacement for my old car. Thankfully it is school holidays so I am off work for 6 weeks so that takes the pressure off somewhat. By incredible luck nobody was in any of the cars or it could have been total carnage.

What an awful shock. The mind can play awful tricks on us running through the What if? scenarios. Hopefully in time you will be able to push it further from the forefront of your thoughts. Not easy so soon after.

I am so pleased to hear that no-one was hurt but take it easy for a few days until the shock wears off a bit.

You can't help but replay the what ifs. Even if you think you wouldn't you do when things happen.

Last year on holiday my daughter was admiring a dog, the owner said she could stroke it as it was friendly. We stroked it and talked for a few minutes to the owner. We left when someone else came to pet the of, we had only walked a few meters when the dog turned and bit the person who was stroking it... I replayed the what ifs for days. (And no I wouldn't have let her near unless the owner said it was friendly).

Take care OP and just be thankful that you were safe x
