OMG I've heard it all now :rotfl:
charging to attend a kiddies birthday party!

    What next??

No, it's not the norm and I'd definitely not be going, what a flaming cheek!
I bet they're expecting a present on top of that too :rotfl:

The best parties my kids had, or went to, were the egg sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, traditional games (musical chairs etc) sort held in back gardens.

And that's exactly what young kiddies birthday parties should be, sounds like fun :) can I come to your next one :j

I have already declined. My first response was 'no bloody way', but as I said at the outset, this is all new to me and I wondered if I was just out of touch. One of my friends pointed out the fact that a large group of us are going out for a meal for a mutual friends' birthday, and each of us will be paying our own way, so was this really any different?
It just feels so wrong on every level.

I've got a 14yo & a 10yo and I've never heard of financing someone else's birthday party. If the parents can't afford it then they need to re-assess their plans. What a cheek doesn't even start to cover it!

Charging guests to celebrate the birthday of a child? I wonder if they expect a present too...

I have never heard anything like this.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

I would say no if my children were asked to pay to attend a party. Not the norm around here.

I have never heard of this either, what a cheek!

It will be interesting to see how many people actually go!

I think it's completely different. Your friend is not having a birthday party and charging people to come.
This is a group of friends going out for a meal.

no it's not normal UNLESS you have an older/younger sibling then I would expect you (as the host) to pay for your OTHER child to attend the same event - but would expect venue to give you massive discount as you are (in effect) part of my party (kind of).
My Dilemma is ALWAYS how much do I spend on the present... and don't get me started on twins (as guests or as party givers)
I would decline BOTH parties AND tell them why!
ETA OP I read in your post that you've heard about people PAYING to attend Weddings - OMG REALLY! I would decline that invitation too.

Unfortunately, I have heard of it once before. Parents had to pay for children to attend a party at a pizza restaurant - about £5 per head. I thought I had heard everything then.
I dread to think what's coming next!
