MMORGs I have played...

Options
The post about games being harder in days gone by got me thinking about the commercial MMORGs I've played over the years. I stopped playing them a long time ago, purely due to lack of free time (I'm an explorer, not a 5 minute drop-in gamer), but have many happy memories.

My list, in rough chronological order:
  • Ultima Online
  • Everquest
  • Lineage 2 (briefly)
  • Dark Age of Camelot (briefly)
  • Anarchy Online (briefly)
  • City of Heroes (briefly)
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online (briefly)
  • Everquest 2
  • Eve Online
  • World of Warcraft
I spent a loooong time on Everquest, in years and hours-in-a-day played.
I have no signature.

I've been in the beta phase for quite a few, a lot very short term. But I consider myself to have played:

    Eve-Online
    World of Warcraft
    Pirates of the Burning Sea
    Age of Conan
    Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Discworld MUD :D

Have logged in and faffed about in many more but those are the ones with any length of time.

Eve-online I dip in and out of. Beautiful and Brutal in equal measure. Have been a (small) part in some of the greatest player driven episodes in gaming history

SW:TOR is a very nice single player MMO. You don't need to play in groups, but obviously it helps and opens up more content. The storylines are good and the voice acting is excellent.

Strangely enough, I've never ever played an MMORPG. I've never really felt the allure that some do, which I'm now finding strange because it seems like it might be right up my street. I might just give it a go - any suggestions?

    Two more obscure ones,

    Myth of Soma

    Legend of Mir

Both were slog-fests, you have to treat it like a second job to get anywhere and you were competing against people who grouped up to play one character 24/7 so basically you could never beat them.

Full of cheating players too, both games servers are now shut down through lack of subscribers.

Was good fun at the time, but ultimately a complete waste of effort.

Give WoW a try, you might be able to try it out until you reach level 20 I think, there is Guild Wars as well.

I had never played an MMO until Warcraft, but was hooked on it for 7 years and am now back semi-casually for the time being after a 9 month break. Also tried Star Wars as well, but computer wasn't up to the standard for it, shame because it seemed like a reasonable enough game.

I played Runescape for a long time, since May 2006 or so until a couple of years ago and yes it is addictive, the land is vast and they bring out new content every week. You can have freeplay but for $5 a month you can get members which opens up a masses of content and dungeons and places to run around.

I might get back into it one of these days :)

Surprised no one's mentioned Rift yet. Recently went Free to Play and isn't very restrictive on what you get without having to pay for anything. Has a great class system that's probably the best in the business and being a few years old now will run well on older computers...

Kingdom of Loathing is good. It's free to play although you can pay for upgrades, funny and has lots of variety to it. Not much in the way of colour though.

Guildwars-For about 4-5 years and over 2000 hours!
WoW-5-6 years and roughly the same hours....
Rift- a couple of months, pretty but no substance.
    City of villians- few months
Guildwars 2- couple of months, no substance again.

I think it will be hard to develop a new 'popular' MMORPG as the concepts have all been done before and generally perfected (Guildwars 1 had arguably the best PvP around, WoW the best PvE). Lots of 'competative' or 'hardcore' players struggle to find a recent MMO with the same attraction.

Lots of people have moved onto MOBA's, League of Legends is the biggest and i currently play it as my only online game.
