Preparing to say goodbye to my boy

  • I am so, so sorry for your loss. You have done such a brave thing for your lovely Milo. I'm sure most of us would choose to leave this life when the time is right, in no pain, with no fear and with the person we love most by our side. You have done that for him even though it was so hard and, honestly, there is no more loving gift you could have given him. It will get easier to bear in time. Big virtual hugs.

Sorry to hear your news...here I am crying, and it's not my dog! Been there, done that, bought the tee shirt (more than once) and it doesn't get any easier.
Crying is fine, go and sob at a friends house, tell everyone Milo has gone because you need to grieve before you can move on. Collect all your favourite photos and remember the good times.
    Thinking of you
    Take care.

I feel so sorry for you, as previously stated by somebody else, been there, done that. It's hard I know but you have absolutely done the right thing. Just hold your other dogs that little bit closer. It will get easier in time. What will you do with his ashes. I've kept all mine, and my DHs, so that we can all be scattered together one day. It's getting pretty crowded on top of my cabinet! XOXO

Thank you all for your kind words, the tears still havent stopped, the pain still raw. I have literally lost my right arm (he used to walk on my right, and the girls on my left).
Just to answer Joans question - what have I done with his ashes? I bought Milo home a couple of hours ago, I had an individual cremation done (the whole pet crematorium thing has not gone well at all and leaves a very nasty taste in my mouth but I have to try and put that out of my mind), I really really struggle with the whole 'Milo in a box' thing regardless of how much I wanted him home with me. So I have done 3 things, I purchased a photo box from Hobbycraft - it has space for a photo on all 4 sides, a removable lid and a rotating base, someone kindly painted his name, dob and date of passing on the lid for me (will attach a pic to this message), I also have some of his ashes in a scatter tube (that's another bad story) and I am taking the girls to our favourite beach tomorrow where I planned to go back to with Milo but we never made it, so I am going to scatter some of his ashes in the sea so he can go for a paddle again, and finally I am having a bracelet & necklace made from his hair & ash - I cant wait to get it made as it means he will be with me always and forever (although i am a little scared of losing them so am also getting a keyring made to keep in his keepsake box) - look up shpangle on the internet - lovely pieces and very very reasonable. So he's home, and he's on my mantelpiece with my late nan, and I shall say goodnight to him every night. (just to add the 2 photos you can see were both taken within the last week - he deteriorated so so quickly) x

  • I am so sorry to hear such sad news. I lost the dog I grew up with almost 4 years ago when she was just 11 years old and I still miss her. Have tears just typing!

One thing that helped me was knowing that she was loved so much and that we gave her the very best life she could have possibly had. It's not much but it helped through a very difficult time. xx

Dawnie, that's really nice with the ashes. Our old dog died in July 2009 from stomach cancer (twelve and a half year old Goldie, so decent innings, although s**t at the end) and my husband died in January 2010 (also cancer, oesophageal, not a decent innings,51) and I had their ashes mixed together. I had some put into a scattering pot and scattered them in 2 of their favourite places. The rest is in a big urn on top of my cabinet with Floyd (cat, 12 years old, oral tumour) Lucas (another Goldie I got 6 days before my husband died. Lucas died at three and a half from epilepsy, tragic, he was my baby) and Tiger (cat, 17yrs, Floyds brother, also oral tumour). They're not all in the same urn, just Hubby and Mav, the rest are separate. Hubby was a telly addict so his urn is placed so he can see the telly. My sister in law has strict instructions that should anything happen to me she is to scatter all the ashes together, it doesn't matter where so long as we're together. Nothing will ever replace your boy but in time the good memories will outweigh the bad. Lucas only died this May and although I've gone on and got another dog she's not a replacement, she's "as well as" not "instead of". And I don't really find myself comparing the dogs, which I thought I would. All my animals (and Hubby of course) each have a special place in my heart and I miss all of them every day but it gets easier to bear in time. Good luck for the future. My thoughts are with you.

Just wanted to share something with you if i may. A couple of days before I said goodbye to Milo we had some photos taken, it was a groupon deal (£18 instead of £210 inc a print and slideshow of the photos), the studio understood Milos illness and it was with the condition that we only did what he could manage and once he'd had enough we stopped. He actually was a superstar (probably helped by the fact I took his ball with us) although it took a lot out of him afterwards. I went to view the photos today, walked into the studio and there on the big tv screen was a photo of me and my boy, the tears started and didnt stop throughout the whole viewing. Thanks to a great photographer/studio I now have some very precious memories of our final days. NB he looks so alert and happy cos the photographer is holding his ball! So unreal to think that 2 days later he had gone.
