Recommend a large, lightweight suitcase

Just booked Ryanair flights and can't believe it cost £50 to take 15kg! OH and I are going to share one hold case and maximise hand luggage for our 2 week holiday. We both currently have hard-sided cases that weigh 4 -5kg each, so I want something new that is much lighter (mine is an ancient one with two wheels at the end that you drag by lifting up the little handle on the end, not a trolley-style so needs replacing anyway).
Any recommendations? We've got World's Lightest cabin bags which are good, but I'm dubious about checking in soft-sided cases. I've seen the Z-frame ones which are light but get mixed reviews. Found this one on House of Fraser with good reviews, but it's a bit expensive!
I think we're looking for something with around 80 l capacity, and ideally no more than 3kg. Wheels are a must.
Any tips?
Thanks.

I love Rimowa cases, but not sure they'd offer the flexibility you're looking for, as they're hard-sided cases, rather than soft-sided with a frame....0

Just bought 2 of these http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Antler+Duolite+Black+69cm+Rollercase/141774106,default,pd.html Given good reviews on Which and come in at 3kg0

I'd never heard of Rimowa... just googled
This is a beauty and would fit the bill but there's no way I'm spending over £400 on something that baggage handlers can just chuck around however they feel like!0 -
We've used soft wheely holdalls for years - is there anything specific you'll be carrying that worries you about not having hard cases?0

Nope, just general holiday stuff! I've just thought hard ones were more durable, less likely to split/burst (and risk have your stuff falling out all over the carousel), contents wouldn't get soaked if sat on the baggage trolley in the rain waiting to be loaded/unloaded...0 -
Yes, the hard ones do last longer, but decent ones are either very expensive and/or relatively heavy. Haven't had problems with holdalls splitting or rain, but we do replace them as and when they get scuffed (more due to our handling than the airports - a bit tricky to get the correct angle to stop them scraping on the floor). They've normally been good for a dozen or so trips though, and that's moving around a fair bit - not just home/airport/airport/hotel and back.
Haven't tried it myself, but I suppose you could always pack into a double layer of bin-liners in a soft bag.0 -
We've used soft-sided cases for years and never had a problem but I have seen some hard shell cases on carousels that have split or the corners have been severely bashed in.
How about this:

It's the same dimensions as the one you're looking at but a fair bit cheaper and is 3kg.
They do different colours.
I think Tripp have a good reputation.
I bought one last year from Debenhams in the sale (but with flowers on), the delivery service was good and I've been pleased with the case.0 -
I had looked at all the Tripp ones on Debenhams but even the Superlite isn't that light for the capacity - the one above only holds 58litres which won't be big enough, but is 3kg, whereas the HoF one holds 86.
I will keep hunting but am more open-minded to a soft-sided one now.0 -
We bought two large Z-Frame cases from Sainsburys when they had the double your Nectar points promo, so £50 for two. Haven't used them yet, but the fabric seems a bit "thin". Maybe its thin in a strong carbon fibre way as opposed to in a cotton way.
I did think about putting all the clothes into a large camping plastic bag just in case the fabric ripped.illegitimi non carborundum0 -

I noticed the capacity difference but as the dimensions are the same, I can't understand the difference between 86L and 58L.
Maybe it's a maths thing.0
