Did man leave unused voucher behind during his getaway?

that makes it sound a bit more exiting than it was in reality. we did not shoot our way out of the place.

I think it probably is relevant.

If your meal had come to exactly £30 and you'd left 2 vouchers for the exact amount you'd owe them nothing.

As it is, you have underpaid by £1.99.

OK, maybe not a great deal of money but you didn't pay your bill in full.

that section does nothing to demonstrate that what i did was unlawful.

it does not indicate that it is an offence to pay a restaurant bill of £20 when the menu says it should have cost £ 30

can you site any part of the law and that actually backs up your assertion?
You offered to pay £20 based on the bill. By the fact they took the bill away again I would assume they have not accepted your offer. Therefore the contract is not complete, but you have walked out without fulfilling your obligations.

but the conversation had moved on from the scenario in my original op. someone suggested that section 3 of the theft act meant that it is unlawful to pay the bill presented if you know it to be incorrect. i pointed out that section 3 of the theft act says no such thing

and i believe that i fulfilled my obligations my making myself available to make payment to them for 17 minutes

You believe you are in the right and everyone else on here so far believes you are wrong. We will never know 100% who would win if it went to court as they have had their payment (most of it) and probably wouldn't bother chasing £1.99 and also have no way of finding you.

I don't think they were reasonable in the time they took especially if they didn't come to you and apologise for the time taken and explain what the problem was.

I also don't think it was reasonable of you to not inform them of the obvious mistake, leave without completing the payment or at least leaving contact details.

How much time out of your life have you wasted posting here and looking up the different laws that may or may not come into play in this situation plus the twenty minutes at the time all because you spotted a mistake and didn't want to point it out to them in the hopes you wouldn't have to pay the full amount? Has it really been worth it considering they had another way of taking the payment anyway so you are only £1.99 better off?

The law disagrees with you - payment may be taken up to six years from the time of purchase/ consumption.

i made myself available for them to take whatever payment they deemed correct for 17 minutes.

when i gave them a 2 minute warning they should have told me they needed longer

they knew i had to go. if they had at that stage asked me for my details i would have gladly provided them
