Writing my contract.....

I am due to start a new job for a small firm. When i asked for a copy of my contract, they said they don't normally have contracts!!! but if i wanted to use my previous employers one and amend a few details i can and they will sign for those terms.
Well i can't actually find it so have found an employment contract online which i have amended with the terms agreed verbally when i agreed to take the job.
My question is;
is there anything i should be putting in there? or covering?

Yes, seriously! i've never written a contract before!
i've google searched the GOV website and have copied and pasted things about holiday allowance, notice periods, data protection and other bits and bobs, i was just wondering if there is anything whcih is massively important to have in a contract?DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -
I must say however that although i'm writing it, he will be reading it and signing so i can't put anything like 10% annual payrises unfortunatelyDEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0

Ok, slightly more seriously now:
Sick pay
Holidays, including process for requesting (and getting refused) them
Any other benefits
Notice period from both sides (fixed or increasing based on length of service?)
Working hours, expectations for overtime
Overtime rates of pay
Normal place of workExcuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -

That's great. I think i've covered all of that
What is the standard sick pay? I've always been paid it in the past but have only had the odd days here and there.
i have spoken to a friend of mine who gets this;
26 weeks full pay sick
26 weeks half pay
statatory sick pay thereafter
Does that sound about right?DEBT FREE AND PROUD'Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt'0 -

Your friend probably works for a large corporate who can absorb the costs of that generous offering re sick pay.
Small employers very often pay statutory sick pay only. I think this is something you need to ask your employer - what they would normally do. It might require a minimum service time (say six months) before anything other than SSP were paid and then might it be slightly enhanced but nothing like your friend's entitlement. It would also be discretionary - in fact your friend's terms might also include "discretion".0 -
By the way, there is no legal requirement on an employer to provide a signed contract re employment. What is required is that they provide their employees (within two months of starting) with written statement of employment particulars.
What must be included but I don't think have been mentioned above are: the employer's name, employee's name, job title (or brief description of the job), date employment began, collective agreements (or statement that there are none), pension scheme arrangements.0 -
Don't forget pension arrangements. You will want to include a generous employer contribution rate!0

Also grievance procedures....0
