New car does not have a tax disc

The law has been changed for a 14 day exemption (display) to cover just this case. It's hardly an improvement though. Whereas a couple of months ago the Merc dealer would have had a tax disc on hand to print off, the new, shrinking, DVLA is trying to retain an importance by holding all tax disc stocks and posting them out. When DVLA is truly privatised (it was "agencyised" long ago) look out for more self-serving improvements.
Noted, thanks.0 -

Has a Merc driver ever passed the attitude test?
I can't imagine that being inconvenienced by the "plebs" is something most Merc drivers would take kindly to :rotfl:“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Picked up our brand new S-Max yesterday, minus a tax disc, we were given a cover note and explained that local DVLA centres were being closed. as it currently stands, we have been given a covernote to cover car until disc arrives in the post. Your not alone OP.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

The AFRL system that was in place for dealerships licensing new vehicles changed on the 22nd July last. As of this date no dealerships hold licence discs for issue.
Upon a new vehicle being registered through a dealership, the supplying dealer is given the option to either have the disc sent directly to the end user or to the dealership. As a customer buying a new car you should have been advised.
It is correct that you can drive only newly registered vehicles for 14 days without displaying a tax disc. However if 8 days have passed and you still haven’t received your disc then there are some 400 post offices who will issue you with a duplicate tax disc providing you present your V5, which tend to arrive within a few days of registration. When I was growing up my father would always tell me that my best friend was my pocket!0 -
When I hear stories like this, it just reinforces my view of the UK and its "laws".
This is a brand new car.
The dealer has taxed the vehicle but the tax disc has not arrived.
The car is therefore legal in every way IMO.
Sadly the powers that be do not wish to take a "common sense" approach to the situation, and the police could well stop the driver and have him/her prosecuted for failing to display.
Do we really have to take this stupidity from people who should know better, as if life is not complicated enough?
No wonder this country is going down the pan, when law abiding citizens can be preosecuted on a technicality, and criminals are let off every day:mad:
End of rant;)
If you read the above link then you'll see that as of 23 July the rules changed and there is no offence driving a new car for uip to 14 days without a tax discRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Having no tax can result in clamping, big penalties, back payment of tax etc, but failing to display the disc is not the same as having no tax at all. In any event it seems the law has just changed so he's OK to drive without displaying the disc.0 -

The issue of not having a tax disc on a new car is proving a real problem for me, as we are going on holiday in the car, and will be away until well after the 14 calendar days grace have expired.
Clearly no one at the DVLA thought of that when they put this new system into place!0 -
The fact that the Police were clueless as to the legal situation is par for the course. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0
