New car does not have a tax disc

Yes - systems change.
So my post #3 is correct - this is (now) normal.
But the DVLA seems to be having problems in coping with the volume of 'things' thay have to do.
I'm still waiting for a my amended V5C after 3 weeks.
I also drove my van for the first 8 days of July with no tax disc after having renewed it on-line on 25th of June - expecting that the disc would arrive in the stated 5 days.
I phoned about it on the 2nd of July and was told to "Wait another few days".
And God help anyone who is transferring a 'Cherished Number'.0 -
Knowing DVLA expect an invoice for not having sorned it.:rotfl::rotfl:I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Watch out for other Merc drivers, if they see you don't have "road tax" they'll try to run you off the road whilst shouting "get out of my way and get some f***king road tax!!!!"“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

and i thought that only happened to cyclists :P0 -
This change doesn't seem to have been widely publicised, but there is a bit about this on the Ford website: http://www.ford.co.uk/DVLA
Don't think you'll have anything to worry about!0 -
There is an exemption for not displaying a valid tax disc which is up to 5 days from the expiry of the previous one (providing there was no gap between discs). I don't know about any other official exemption.
Have you checked on line to see whether the car is showing as taxed on the DVLA website?
https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s1
I was just looking for that page to add the link. :T0 -
I called my local police station to verify this and they didnt really have a clue, they said if was an offence and I could be prosecuted etc etc. Then I found this on DVLA site https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dvla-local-office-closure-plan-announced theres a mention of the new policy towards the end.
Clearly very poorly rolled and by DVLA. Dealers should know better and should have had their own literature made to give to customers at handover. Shocking.0 -
When I hear stories like this, it just reinforces my view of the UK and its "laws".
This is a brand new car.
The dealer has taxed the vehicle but the tax disc has not arrived.
The car is therefore legal in every way IMO.
Sadly the powers that be do not wish to take a "common sense" approach to the situation, and the police could well stop the driver and have him/her prosecuted for failing to display.
Do we really have to take this stupidity from people who should know better, as if life is not complicated enough?
No wonder this country is going down the pan, when law abiding citizens can be preosecuted on a technicality, and criminals are let off every day:mad:
End of rant;)0 -

I agree with what you say about the system.
However as it stands the law says you need to display a disc. If you're not display then you're not abiding by the law are you?
Common sense should kick in so it would be down to the attitude test.0 -
The law has been changed for a 14 day exemption (display) to cover just this case. It's hardly an improvement though. Whereas a couple of months ago the Merc dealer would have had a tax disc on hand to print off, the new, shrinking, DVLA is trying to retain an importance by holding all tax disc stocks and posting them out. When DVLA is truly privatised (it was "agencyised" long ago) look out for more self-serving improvements.0
