Laptop won't connect to the internet.

Laptop running Win 7.
Have cleared the cache in both firefox and chrome as they're the browsers I use.
Run Windows Network Diagnostics. The message after trouble shooting is
The remote device won't accept the connection.
I've tried resetting the router and restarting the laptop. Though I'm able to connect to the internet through my smartphone and my netbook.
I've cleared the internet connections and gone through the process of reconnecting and though the laptop is connecting to the router it's still not allowing internet access.
Running the diagnostic from the Wireless network connection screen it says the the problem with the wireless adaptor or access point is resolved. But there is still no internet access when I open either of the browsers.

It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

So can you connect via ethernet? If yes, then you know it's purely a wireless issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I've no ethernet cable to check, but am able to connect via my netbook (which am using to post at the moment) and my phone.
Although since last night the netbook won't connect via chrome, but will still connect via IE - but I don't use the netbook often enough to be massively concerned about that just now.
Planning to go in to town later to pick up a cable but am stuck at home til mid morning waiting on deliveries. Might take the lappy with me and see if it'll connect to my work place's free wifi but don't particularly want to visit work on my day off! It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

which router, check the encryption password, which antivirus and firewall, what's the history!!

Router box is long gone - am in the middle of moving house and assorted computer 'stuff' is in one of the boxes which was taken to my storage unit 300 miles away last weekend! So poundland it will be later on.
Its a Virgin Media super hub router.
Antivirus is avast, firewall is windows standard.
Everything was fine tuesday night, came home last night and it simply wouldnt connect. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

If it's VM, reboot the modem as well. Switch everything off, then reboot modem, then router, then laptop, in that order. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

There is no separate modem. Unless thats part of the tv box?

Is there a switch on the laptop that has got accidentally moved? I had this with my son's laptop. The wireless switch (which I didn't even know was there) had been moved to the off position. Depending on the laptop it may be on the back or the bottom and not clearly marked.Ditch 100 in January Challenge 100/100

If the wireless was switched off it wouldnt even pick up the router surely?
Regardless have bought an ethernet cable and it still won't connect. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

So the good news is that you now know that it isn't a wireless issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
