Tell me how to work the lights on a new Polo I have just hired. The head lights are on in the off position and I cannot get the switch to turn on the fog lights!
Must say the DAB radio is pretty useless too! difficult to find stations, the scan mode misses them, and reception is poor. This is on DAB and FM.

Does the car not have a manual in it? Hire cars usually do...

If it's a hire car, I suspect it is pretty new and hence the lights are day time running lights.
Oh and to turn the fog lights on, you have to be in at least side light mode and the switch pulls back once for front fogs and twice for front and rear fog lights.

It is a brand new hire car, 800 miles, no manual or anything.
Thought day time running lights went out with the old Volvos?
The switch is rotary, off, side and head lights at the top and front and rear fog lights at 7 & 8 oclock but the switch only turns to the top positions, I could not switch the fog lights on in the fog through Dorset today!
I tried turning the switch in both directions, didn't force it in case it broke.

DRL is mandotary on post 2011 cars I believe.
As mentioned above, to turn the fog lights on, turn the switch to die light or dipped beam then pull the switch towards you

If the switch is still is as fitted to Audis you pull it for fog lights.

    That's poor.

I have a Skoda (VW switches etc) and I couldn't work out how to turn the fog lights on until I found the right bit in the manual. As others have explained, once the rotary light switch is in the on position it can be pulled towards you. In my car one click towards you is front fog lights, two clicks is rear fog lights as well. (My car is 8 years old but guess it may still be similar.)

Thanks all now sorted, yes you pull the switch out two stops when in the headlight position. Not obvious is it?
Now, what happens when I push the same switch in when in sidelights? Nothing obvious that I can see.

All VAG cars have had their headlights / fogs work like that for at least a decade.

Pulling it out "2" stops activates both front and rear fogs which should be indicated by lights on the dash.

Pulling it out "1" stop only activates the front sets of fogs.

When the fogs are on the dash should have distinct and separate lights indicating so.

They'll look like a line hashed through.

DRL's unless you've been under a rock, driving asleep have been common on new cars for the last 3 years(?)

turn the dial so that the lights are on and then pull the dial, no idea why you want the fogs on in non foggy conditions

They dont leave the manuals in the hire cars as they get stolen like anything else that isnt screwed down by the various drivers.

If you have questions, just call the company you rented it from.

Whilst the headlights are on as DRLs, the instrument and rear lights wont be so you will still have to turn the headlight switch to 'on' when the sun sets unless it has auto lights.

For the radio reception, have you checked that the aerial hasn't gone 'missing'?
