Blacklisted due to my darling son!

My son decided he needed a new mobile and, while I was in hospital, went on my computer to try and sort one. After hitting problems getting one under his name, he tried to do under mine. He told me about as soon as I came home and was soon the owner of a nice new Samsung mobile. However, then he lost it and couldn't see the sense in insuring it nor subsequently, paying for it after he lost it. Now I've come to try and get one myself, I'm blacklisted. Spoke to the network but they won't do anything unless I report my son for fraud, either that or pay for his phone in its entirety. My son is very apologetic but as he isn't working due to being made redundant, he has no money to keep up the payments. I realise there is little which can be done but just decided to post this rather than rant at my son (again).

If the phone is still in minimum term contract then you have to pay for it anyway. Regardless of the handset being lost, if you stopped making the monthly payments then your credit file is probably already trashed. I assume that this all happened some time ago?
So it's not just getting a phone contract that is now the issue, it's getting any sort of credit at all for the next 6 years. I suggest you urgently check your credit file.
Perhaps you should have reported him after all, since he's committed a criminal offence?
PS: if he told you at the time, why didn't you tackle the issue then?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Well as much as I would like a mobile phone, I would prefer my son to have a clean future. If its a choice between a bad credit file and my son having a criminal record then I'll have to bear it. Your son has defrauded the network of a mobile phone which he doesn't see why he has to pay for because he lost it. Added to that he has trashed your credit rating for the next 6 years.
It was done with your consent and you were not bothered about it untill you tried to get a phone yourself .....what do you expect us to say ???It's not just about the money0 -
Yepp, maybe I was being naive. My son didn't intend to lose the phone nor did he intend to be made redundant at 19 years of age. Had he kept his job he would have maintained the payments. Does your son have anything he can sell (Xbox, Wii etc) to give you money towards the outstanding debt?
Can he find bar work or some other part time work until a permanent role comes up? Literally anything, including stacking shelves at local shops, to raise funds to clear the debt. It won't help much, but at least it will get the collectors off your back. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

He is doing just that, he has just finished training for care work (as opposed to his training in print and design) which is paying minimum wage but only for a few hours per week part time currently.

If the contract is in your name, could you make the payments and get the benefit of the airtime to use yourself, at least, and buy a cheap phone to use?0

One benefit, of course is that his Credit File is blemish free - it is only you that has the default. There is nothing really you can usefully do to rectify this if reporting him for fraud is not an option, even if you agreed to pay it off the default would remain as fact.
Just don't take any credit - or if you need a mobile, get your son to get it in HIS name.0 -
