Motability Car Tax Disc

Hi all!

My dad has been awarded DLA or whatever it's called now. He is entitled to the higher rate and wants to get a motability car. He asked my to find out what a low emission car ie under 100 CO2 says on its tax disc. Normally it would be exempt and say Nil, but I suspect for this purpose it would read disabled. I don't know why he's worrying, but he read somewhere that criminals target vehicles with a 'disabled' tax disc, and break in with the hope of finding a blue badge. For a quiet(er) life I said I would try and find out.

Many thanks,

Natasha

  • I understand the question.

The question is will the Tax Disc stated "Disabled" or "Nil/ Excempt".

The father does not want his Tax Disc to state "Disabled" because he is worried that someone will try to take his blue badge.

I think we are all thinking the same - it's a chance in a million and there are so many on the road, but if he is anything like my family - there is no point even stating that.

I suspect the Tax is provided under the scheme as everything is inclusive, and if the vehicle doesn't need to pay - maybe they won't have a need to use the diabled excemption and it will just state nil/ or exempt as standard?

I'd just ask the dealer that you are using or maybe someone here will have a car under the emission value of course they would also need to be using the scheme - maybe long shot though...

Lizzie, why would it say so? Could you not change it if requested to use the vehicle exemption rather than disabled exemption if asked? It's always good for us to understand why :-)

Presumably it would be a standard thing - either there would be a normal tax disc that stated its category (e.g. Nil rate etc) or, regardless of emission level, they all say Disabled.

We pick up our Motability car on Thursday, it's not a low emission one (on the contrary it's a bit of a gas guzzler!) but I can look then to see what the tax disc says.

All Motability vehicles state *disabled* on the tax disc irrespective of emissions :)

  • Well if it helps you could tell him that blue badges are now not as easy to use - they have a barcode and will provide details of who they belong to if scanned. There is also a central database that can be used to store details of loss and theft - again invalid when scanned.

And as you have probably thought - most times you don't need the tax disc to tell you there is a blue badge - most parking require it on full view :-/

Better still if you report it lost or stolen you can simply get another :-)
  • Its just the standard thing. The tax discs either say PC, DC or Disabled depending in the class. As from Monday the DVLA print their own discs once we've hit the button to tax.

Oh right. Always good to know :)
  • Thanks for your posts. I agree that the chances of your car being broken into because of the tax disc are pretty slim, but you try telling my dad that! The crime rate where he lives is very high so I can can kind of understand his worry.
    Thanks again.
