I'm stupid. I have never understood water bills and the different parts they refer to (no excuse, I should find out). Anyway, I've spoken to my water provider today as I moved recently. The lady announced that I'd be paying less per month as I wouldn't have a 'water surface charge' (or something like that) at this property.

Anyone care to enlighten me as to what that was all about? Evidently I was paying for it for the last few years. How embarrassing, paying out money for stuff I have no clue about...

Different companies have different terms.

However 'water surface charge' I expect is 'Surface Water Drainage(SWD) charge. Loads of posts on SWD

This is a charge if rainwater from your property(mainly gutters) and land enters the sewerage system.

Newer properties tend to have rainwater from gutters go to a soakaway - which is essentially a pit filled with builders rubble under the garden - most of us do not know where it is situated.

Your old property might or might not have had a soakaway.You would have needed to claim relief from that charge.

Every company has different ways of collecting that charge and the amount varies greatly. If property is not metered it is usually an additional charge per £RV.

If metered it can be a fixed charge.
