United Utilities !!!!-up - do I just have to lump it?

I live in a new build complex where there are ten houses (all 3 years old, and most of us have been there from the start). Unbeknown to us until today, a neighbour has been paying our water bill, and we've been paying the water bill of somebody next door but one. Apparently, it was due to a mix-up by the builder when passing the information on UU.

The upshot of this is that they're saying we owe them a further £250. Do I have no choice but to pay this, or is there something I could do?

Thanks.

Presumably your neighbour has got a similar refund?

Yes you do - all they are doing is charging for the water you actually used - do talk to them tho - they should be able to spread the cost or defer payment for a while as it wasnt your fault either. It certainly wasnt UU fault as they only supply the meter to the builders (often they dont even fit them themselves in cases like this) they then rely on getting the correct meter/address info from the builders as they are not responsible for pipe work or where it goes after the meter.......
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know
