Travelodge Refund

I occasionally go away working for my sister who has a catering company and we usually stay in Travelodges. I went to Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago and the other person who went with me complained in the morning that her bed smelt of aftershave so she thought someone else had slept in it. She made a big fuss and they issued a refund. Now my sister had paid for the room but they issued the refund to this girl's account. I didnt say anything because I thought she would allow for this refund when she billed my sister for the job. However it became apparent that she did not intend to do this.
The question is should Travelodge have refunded a different card from the one that the room was paid for with?

I use Premier Travel Inns quite a lot - all billed to my companies business account
I had 2 nights refunded to me personally last summer when I complained that a room was too hot to sleep in [it was 32 degrees]
The way I see it is that I was the one inconvenienced so I should get the compensation0 -

Yes I would normally agree with that but this person is obviously always thinking of ways to make money and also my room stank of cigarettes and I did not complain. The question however was is it legal for Travelodge to give her the money. I thought that shops etc always had to refund on the card used to pay.0 -
I guess it depends on whether or not they saw it as a refund rather than compensation0

Sounds more like theft by the girl who stayed there to me. If she didn't pay for the room, its not her money to be refunded. Regardless of whether Travelodge refunded the money to the wrong card, the money does not belong to the girl who currently has it. She has already been paid for the job (which includes staying in the hotel) so she has no claim over the refunded cost of the travelodge.
Your sister should withold payment until the matter is resolved. The girl has no right to leave your sister out of pocket.0 -
Well I can see it both ways.
It was the girl who was inconvenienced so if it was compensation then she should receive it.
However what puzzles me is why she didn't tell them about it before hand.
You should give the business the chance to put the problem right and I would rather have a different clean room than sleep in dirty sheets.0 -

I can see why you chose the avatar .
That's theft.0 -
Legally, a business can issue a refund to any card they choose. However, if a refund is sent back to the card originally used to make payment then the business does not pay the card company's percentage, which is why refunds are normally made in this manner.
In this case I am entirely on the side of the "girl". She was paid to do a piece of work, and by all accounts did so to a satisfactory standard. She was also given the cost of acceptable accommodation. She was the person who suffered because of the state of the room, and the provider of that room compensated her for this experience.0 -

I think the question has been answered. Apparently companies can refund any card. Now it is up to my sister to decide how to deal with it. What I did not say is we left Somerset at 6.30 that evening and when we were on our way she anounced she had to see a band that were playing nearby on our way. As I cant drive at night I had no choice to go for a meal while she went for this gig. She also asked me to get her a takeway ( which she did not pay for) and subsequently we did not get to the hotel till midnight. Had she not messed us around we would have been there earlier. If it was me I would have gone to reception immediatly and got moved. She also said that mabe she could have the Tesco Clubcard points for the shopping ( £400 plus! ) as I had forgotten to bring my sisters card. I said no and kept the receipt for the points to be added later by my sister.
Therefore I think she was extremely cheeky and should have the money deducted.0
