Compensation for cancelled non-EU flights

Options
I have received compensation from Easyjet a couple of times for additional costs incurred due to cancelled flights, so when my stepson's Air Asia flight from Clark (Philippines) to Sydney was cancelled today, with no advance warning (though he had booked it weeks ago), I assured him that reclaiming the extra £600 he had to spend to book an alternative flight with Air Philippines plus taxi to Manilla to catch it, shouldn't be a problem. However, it seems that the compensation agreement outlined in MoneySavingExpert.com only relates to EU flights. Anyone know if my stepson has any chance of recouping the extra he had to spend because of today's cancellation?

Every chance - assuming he has a decent travel insurance policy.

But not under EU261 as the answer is in the title of the Regulations, European Union, and therefore clearly not applicable at all for flights which do not touch the EU. I suspect you would need a very good policy to pay out £600 if no contact was made with the insurer before buying the new ticket
  • Thanks for your responses. I don't think that his Debenhams backpackers insurance policy is good enough to cover this - in fact it doesn't offer any compensation for delays, only for total cancellation or curtailment of the holiday. Plus he hasn't yet received his refund for the cancelled flight; Air Asia told him it could take up to 14 days to process! Seems to be an airline worth avoiding.
  • :jI'd like to thank MSE I used the template letter to Tho. Cook after a 6.5 hour delay September 2012
they offered £1750 in travel vouchers with strings attached told them we wanted cash they're sending it
