Help Choosing New Mobile

Hi.

I want to change my old Blackberry and would welcome feed back on what other people are using that meet with my requirements which are.
I will not be downloading videos, music, apps or games. I do not use social media except the old fashioned meeting down the pub or out on the trails. The quality of the camera is not important, that is what I have digital camera for.

I need to be able to push emails from my 4 different email accounts direct to the phone without any mincing about with work arounds, code writing, trial and error with apps etc. I want to be able to watch SkyGo on occasions and use the remote setting of my Sky+ box and browse the web.

Thank you.

Ok where is my push bike? Im off down to the pub:beer:

Norman.

    Hello there :)
Since you need to have access to SkyGo/ Sky+ functionality, either the iPhone or an Android device would be the most recommended. As you mentioned that you wont be downloading much games etc, then the iPhone is almost instantly discounted ; so we'd definitely be looking for an Android device.

How much are you looking to spend per month roughly and I'll have a look around for you :)

    Hey Norman,
Any particular network you'd want to go with? Normal average monthly spend? Just so I can make sure that going sim free and buying a phone won't be much more expensive or whether it could save you money in the long run.

If you definitely wouldn't want to commit to a contract just let me know and I'll look for sim free deals :)

Ryan has just put you on hold... Please continue to hold and he will be right with you... Your post is important to us :)

Totally the vibe I got from the last post.

I just wanted to ask why £500 would be the budget... For what you need, and from an MSE perspective, it seeks quite a lot to get push email and Sky Go. For that price you could get an iPad Mini and a low costing data SIM.

    Haha brilliant :D!
The £500 was the main reason why I said about considering a contract - simply because by the time you could possibly add on the calls/texts/data on top of that, you could end up paying ALOT more. The nexus does seem a good phone too and would do what you'd want, and it's at a lowish price that isn't too bad :)

Personally if I had £500 to spend I'd get an iPad Mini for £269, a semi-decent Android/Windows Phone (Lumia 5/620 or Nexus) for email and a SIM only with Three that allows tethering. That way I get access to 2 App stores, can enjoy watching Sky Go on a decent screen and get access to emails/documents and more. You can also sync Android or Windows Phone to iOS for docs or pics using SkyDrive or Box.

I understand the above but in my case I do not want to be carrying two devices about.
At present Iam on a 30 day sim only deal with Virgin for £12 per month and I get 1200 mins, unlimited texts and 1gb of data. I want to stay on a 30 day sim only deal so I can swap and change as new deals come along, hence wanting to purchase an unlocked phone.

So assuming the equivilent of a 24 month contract my max spend to give me what I want is £32 per month, including purchasing a phone and paying for airtime, over the next 24 months.

    Thank you.

    Norman.

OK Norman, couple of options for you. I'll use the HTC one and the iPhone 5 as an example. If there is any phone you've seen or heard of that you like the sound of, let me know !

    30 day Sim Only

    NETWORK : Virgin
    Price Plan : Current Plan ; £12 p/m
Device : iPhone 5 unlocked - £490 (ebay, brand new)
    Cashback ; NO

TOTAL YEARLY COST ; £634 (£778 if 24 month contract)

    NETWORK : T-Mobile
    Price Plan : £18 - 1000mins, Utd texts, 3gb data.
Device: HTC one unlocked - £499 (amazon, brand new)
    Cashback ; NO

TOTAL YEARLY COST ; £715 (£931 if 24 month contract).

Obviously, you could have opted to keep your £12p/m sim for the HTC one too, which would be a little cheaper again.

    24 MONTH CONTRACT

    NETWORK : O2
Price Plan : £32 - Unlimited Texts, Calls and 1gb data
    Device: HTC one - FREE
    Cashback ; via Quidco - £50

TOTAL YEARLY COST : £768 (£718 effective cost with £50 deducted)

The iPhone 5 plans are pretty much the same. There are however plans much cheaper than the one listed, but I tried to keep as close to your current sim only option. Judging by the way the prices are coming out, you'd probably be best going down the SIM only route and getting your own phone which you've said you can afford if you really dont want to be tied into a contract. Given contracts are 24 months, they are definitely working out cheaper in the long run as the example shows. There are probably good little deals out there, but they're more difficult to find. Hope I've helped a little :)

Oh and remember you can trade in and get some money back from your old phone. It might not be much given it's a blackberry, but hey it's still something you can put towards the cost :)
