dog tag - what to put on it?

Hi. Now that we are allowed to take our puppy out for a walk I want to get a tag for his collar. I've read that you shouldn't put your dog's name on the tag, in case someone tries to steal them and can call their name. Should I just put our mobile phone number on? What does everyone else put on their dog's tag? Thanks.

We have first line of address and postcode on one side and phone number on the other, he is also microchipped.0

we also had concerns about this. There had been cases of dogs being ' dognapped' and owners were rang and asked for money to return the dog!!
Our dog does not have a tag ,he is however microchipped and this is tested on each visit to the dreaded vet.Casey0 -
I think it maybe law to have a dog tag. Not sure, but I think I read it somewhere.
On the tag I have it just has my surname, address & mobile number. On the other side it says: "I am micro-chipped".
I never put the dogs' name on. Also, my dog wears a harness. As soon as he comes in the house, the harness is taken off. He doesn't wear a collar ever.0 -

How did they handle the switch? I only ask because once I safely had my dog back all hell would break loose. If they did have a payment method that avoided meeting me face to face, I would spend a fortune to track them down.
Our dog's tag has:
side 1: Name and mobile number
side 2: First line of address/post code & chippedChuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Thanks for the replies. He is microchipped, and has a small tag saying that it is a bio-thermo chip (so no thermometers up the bottom yay!) and "scan me" in case he gets lost. I think I will put our surname and phone number on a second tag. I was told that lead training is much more effective with a collar than a harness as it teaches them not to pull. But obviously some dogs won't pull anyway. A harness certainly looks more comfy!DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

Dog's name ( she had no recall whatsoever so that was never going to be a problem!), my house number, postcode and phone number on one side, my mum's phone number on the other side as mum looked after her while I was working.
Previous mutt used to go awol all the time and was collected at various times from the local sandwich shop, the kitchens of a residential home and a nearby block of flats where she was tied to a table and fed a packet of biscuits while they waited. There was a definite theme to her truancy......All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
My dogs tag states their initial, my surname, first line of address postcode and telephone number. They are also microchipped.
Every dog is required by law to have an ID tag when in a public place or you could be fined.

My dog's just got my surname, mobile no. and that he's microchipped on his tag. I was told not to put my address as if the dog has been taken they might assume that you'd be out searching for your dog and come and burgle you. Pretty unlikely but you never know.0

It is
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/379
"The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your postcode is optional (but we would strongly advise that you include it), and your telephone number is also optional (but advisable). "
I don't have my dogs' names on their tags, but only really because it was easier/cheaper to have them made identical. As well as my details, the other side says chipped & neutered (to put off anyway stealing them to sell or breed) and has my vet's address/postcode and phone number (incase they were found injured, they could be taken straight there and my vets be able to ID them and treat them ASAP). I wouldn't be worried about having the name on the tag - by the time someone was close enough to read the tag, they're close enough to grab the dog anyway.
Chances are, my dogs are far more likely to get loose and be found by someone who could calm them by calling them by their name, than by someone who'd use the name to lure them over to steal them. Ditto with the address..what are the chances of someone not only finding your dog, but them being a burglar who just happens to decide to then rob your house?
And anyway, most dogs will respond to a "here doggy doggy!" in an enthusiastic pitch, and/or food bribes, so I don't think knowing the dog's name gives someone any extra power.0 -

You can buy training harnesses I think.
I use a harness because the load isn't all on the dogs' neck. Also, I find it easier to control my dog too. I bought the Ezydog harness & lead. The lead has some give in it too which I find benefical.
I am not a fan of collars anyway. My dog is a Bedlington Whippet & leaving a collar on all the time can rub away the fur.0
