Launching new Auction Site??

To begin with, lets make it clear that in no way I'd be mis-using this site and do not intend to spam members by asking them to join or even ask Martin about it. If such is the case, I would certainly put up a business proposition to Martin.
In any case, I'm going to do a little survey about this whole thing and hope to find about something that may help break that gap between the world and ebay.
Thanks

why all the negative - lots go under, but hey I've only seen ebay marketing....
Competition is required - you only have to read a small fraction of the negative comments about ebay to realise that....
With a different offering, good marketing..where there's a will there's a way.
Good luck with your research0 -
Thanks Murtle. I've started the research today and hope to find something positive very soon.
Thanks

I think you should go for it too - all ebay have is a very large marketing department on their side but there are holes in ebays format and delivery of service so if you can find them then you will at least be on the right road.....

My Tuppence worth .....
You should start by looking at the long list of auction sites that have tried to offer an alternative to EBay ..... And failed.
Then try researching those auction sites that are currently trying to make a go of competing with EBay ..... With limited success.
Then look at the list of successful auction sites ..... Note where the word EBay appears ..... And note how short the list is.

Hmmm, how about looking at what ebay doesn't allow the sale off, but however is actually legal to sell?
The obvious one that pops into my mind is 'adult' movies and the like. To build a user base you would run this specilist auction site for a year or so, then launch a new site thats sells everything and give your customers an automatic transfer over to that site.
I'd also try and strike a deal with NoChex, NatWest FastPay or someother online money transfer service, as I figure a major appeal of ebay for some people is the secure feeling that an inergrated purchase and payment offers.
Just my two pence,

That sounds good and a good point to be noted. Thanks0

but so many people are peed off by ebay - that can't be a good longterm business strategy??

Tojo Ralph - nicely sumed up! I agree completly. I have often thought about how there is the potential for another auciton site to compete with eBay. But, you have to take a step back and look at what eBay is and how BIG they are now. For a start, you would need huge amounts of money to start up a rival company.
Soo and other people are right, eBay will always be number 1 and there are so many companies that have failed, I would hate to see you lose money on this project Terry.
On the other hand, it takes a brave person to try and do what you are doing!! I guess thorough research is the best place to start and I wish you every success with your project.
However, without sounding too negative, I doubt I would ever sign up to a new auction site, as I would know it would not be a touch on what eBay is - I would know there wont be millions of people there to potentially buy my item and that is why I would probably be right in thinking that it would not get a final price higher than what it would get on eBay.:rolleyes:The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)0 -
Josh if you were offered the ability to place free listings, the ability to place a reserve on your item even under £50 (for free) and maybe referal credit for you refer friends and buyers to the new site - would you give it a go??Official DFW Nerd 210
