Changing Network - how to copy SIM?

Hi,

Coming to the end of contract with Three Mobile for a Samsung Galaxy S2. Am considering options - either to go SIM only with Three or switch to another network.

If I go with another network how can I check to see what is stored on my SIM card, rather than on the phone itself and how do I transfer over what is on the existing SIM to any new SIM?

Sorry for dim questions but haven't had a contract before so not sure how it all works and never had a smartphone so not sure how to switch SIMs without losing valuable data etc.

Many thx in advance.

Very little will probably stored on the SIM card, you could try taking it out and starting the phone up without it. Most smartphones will store Texts and Contacts on the phone itself now.
  • when I got a new sim, T-Mobile has a reader in store and copied all my details from an o2 sim onto my T-Mobile sim free of charge

I don't understand what data you have on the SIM that you want to copy. Your mobile number is on it, but when you port your number to another network, your mobile number is automatically put on to the new SIM (or more significantly at network level).

What has this got to do with contacts? Contacts are stored in the phone (which the OP is retaining), not on the SIM card. I still don't understand what data the OP has stored on the SIM card.

The contacts are the only data that might be on the sim. OP hasn't stated that they are saved in the phone.

The contacts are stored on the phone, but can be backed up to a google account, so if and when changing handsets, the required data is readily available to the new device with minimal fuss.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but what has this got to do with copy data from the SIM card?

Which phones store contacts on the SIM card? Although very old phones (over ten years ago) used to do this, no current phones do this. In the days when contacts were stored on the SIM card, you could only store a name and corresponding phone number; there was no support for a contact card containing a separate first name and surname, address, multiple phone numbers per contact, e-mail address etc. This is why smartphones can't store contacts on the SIM card.
